    Primarily responsible for collaborating with classroom teachers to develop bilingual students' ability to effectively perform courses of study in the English language by developing appropriate lesson plans and instructional techniques to motivate, stimulate, and inspire students; providing methods to support and/or reinforce classroom goals in the home; providing a safe and optimal learning environment; evaluating students level of English fluency and providing feedback to regarding student progress, expectations, goals, and activities.


    This list is not all-inclusive and is only intended to illustrate the various responsibilities and duties performed.

    1. Collaborate with classroom teachers to employ instructional methods and obtain a variety of materials and resources for use in educational purposes that are most appropriate for meeting stated curriculum objectives and district benchmarks.

    2. Adapt classroom work for the purpose of providing students with instructional materials; addressing individualized learning plans; and/or reinforcing classroom objectives.

    3. Administer tests and language assessments for the purpose of evaluating students' language ability and/or status of current abilities.

    4. Advise staff and parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of supporting teacher's expectations, developing methods for improvement, and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment; Effectively communicate in written and verbal communications.

    5. Assess students (e.g. progress, expectations, goals, etc.) for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents, and administration.

    6. Assist classroom and other teachers for the purpose of implementing curriculum and the achievement of curriculum goals with fidelity; Establish clear objectives which are communicated to students and parents.

    7. Collaborate with a variety of parties (e.g. instructional staff, school personnel, parents, community resources, etc.) for the purpose of improving the quality of student outcomes, developing solutions, achieving established program objectives, and/or planning curriculum.

    8. Counsel students for the purpose of improving performance, health status, problem-solving techniques, and a variety of personal issues.

    9. Demonstrate methods required to perform classroom and/or subject-specific assignments for the purpose of providing an effective school program and addressing the needs of individual students.

    10. Develop language outcome plans for the purpose of providing support and/or carrying out objectives for students' success.

    11. Direct paraprofessional, volunteer, and/or student teachers for the purpose of providing an effective school program and addressing the needs of individual students.

    12. Evaluate students' performance within the subject area for the purpose of determining student progress and/or developing remediation plans.

    13. Instruct bilingual students for the purpose of improving their success in academics and skills.

    14. Assist with maintaining the classroom and classroom supplies for the purpose of providing an environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students, encouraging the progress of individual students; Encourage an environment that reflects the fact that each child is known as an individual and as a learner.

    15. Manage student behaviour for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment.

    16. Model appropriate Language communications for the purpose of developing students' ability to communicate effectively in the English language.

    17. Participate in a variety of meetings, trainings, seminars, conferences, and workshops for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.

    18. Maintain and improve professional competence by keeping up to date with developments in the subject area, teaching resources, and methods to make relevant changes to instructional plans and activities.

    19. Prepare teaching materials and a variety of manual and electronic documents, files, and records (e.g. grades, attendance, lesson plans, substitute plans, anecdotal records, reports, etc.) for the purpose of implementing lesson plans and documenting student progress.

    20. Report incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining the personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to Education Code, administrative and/or school policies.

    21. Respond to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing appropriate personnel for resolution.

    22. Respond to inquiries from a variety of sources (e.g. teachers, parents, administrators, etc.) for the purpose of resolving issues, providing information and/or direction.

    23. Support classroom teachers and other school personnel for the purpose of assisting them in the implementation of classroom goals and individual student plans.

    24. Other duties as assigned by the Administration or Board of Education.

    1. Knowledge of English language best practices for elementary and/or middle school education.

    2. Work under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods.

    3. Direct other persons within a small work unit.

    4. Tracking budget expenditures.

    5. Utilization of resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions.

    6. Perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.

    7. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; administering first aid; operating equipment used in a classroom setting, including a computer; using pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and planning and managing projects.

    8. Perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and/or ratios.

    9. Read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions.

    10. Analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions.

    11. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: age-appropriate activities; concepts of grammar and punctuation; safety practices and procedures; and stages of child development.

    12. Schedule activities, meetings, and/or events.

    13. Gather, collate, and/or classify data.

    14. Use job-related equipment.

    15. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods.

    16. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize specific, job-related equipment.

    17. Problem-solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans; problem-solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem-solving with equipment is moderate.

    18. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; working as part of a team; working with frequent interruptions; communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; and working with detailed information/data.


    Bachelor's degree in a job-related area, a valid Illinois Professional Educator License, an Elementary Education Endorsement, and a Bilingual Education Teacher Spanish Endorsementan are required. English Second Language Endorsement preferred. Demonstrated experience in a culturally diverse educational setting. Any equivalent combination of training, education, or experience that meets the minimum requirements.


    The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; and significant fine finger dexterity. The general job required 30% sitting, 20% walking, and 50% standing. The job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
