REPORTS TO:
Director of Special Programs and/or Building Principal

DEFINITION:
Under limited supervision, provides speech/language services to District students with exceptionalities in compliance with state and federal guidelines for Somerton Elementary School District.

SPECIFIC DUTIES/TASKS INCLUDE:

Serves on Child Study team at each school to collaborate with parents, school and outside personnel regarding speech and language concerns.
Assists the team in generating education alternatives, modifications, and referrals for assessment or community- based interventions/services.
Conducts multi-factored speech and language assessments of children and youth of additional evaluator results referred according to state and federal mandates. Assessments include but are not limited to; consideration as appropriate for the areas of personal-social adjustment, adaptive behavior, language and communication skills, and environmental-cultural influences.
Generates a speech and language report following each assessment that contains all required components as defined by state and federal mandates.
Reviews speech and language evaluation reports of all incoming transfer students and writes addendum to include any missing components required by state and federal mandates.
Participates as case manager at multi-disciplinary conference to interpret results of the speech and language evaluation, make recommendations and assist in making educational placement.
Assists in the development of the Individualized Educational Program (IEP) for all students placed in special education programs with a speech and language component.
Provides in-service and other skill enhancement activities to school personnel, parents and others in the community, regarding issues of learning, development and behavior as related to speech and language.
Serves as a resource to school staff members in the development of a balanced program for oral communication and speech and language improvement. Assists and guides teachers in observing, describing and referring suspected and identified speech and language impairments.
Provides screening to identify speech-impaired children as the need arises.
Assists in proper referrals of individuals to agencies and specialist in the community as appropriate.
Provides appropriate individualized programs of therapy, goals and objectives to meet individual students' needs and remediate existing speech impairment.
Provides supervision to speech staff, as appropriate.
Performs other related duties as required by supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS REQUIRED:

Knowledge of appropriate material to meet the needs, age, cultural and language differences of students.
Knowledge of federal, state and District laws, rules and regulations related to the operation of public schools and personnel.
Knowledge of special education guidelines and techniques.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Degree in Speech-Language Pathology.
Must possess or eligible to obtain and maintain Arizona Department of Education Speech- Language Pathologist Certification.
