Position Summary

The Vanguard School is pleased to announce an opening for a full-time Speech Language Pathologist!

If you are a responsible, patient, caring individual with experience in a special education setting, we want to hear from you! Ideally, you should have prior experience working with students diagnosed with autism, neurological impairments and/or emotional disorders; familiarity with the RR and IEP process is a plus.

Our team of speech & language pathologists provide students with services that promote improvement in receptive and expressive language skills, speech intelligibility, non-verbal communication skills, written language skills and socialization. They work in close collaboration with the classroom teacher and therapists from other disciplines to offer an integrated teaching and treatment approach in implementing the IEP. The caseload for this position is primarily upper school students ages 14 to 21.

The position is full-time working a typical School Year calendar. Benefits include: paid health insurance, paid dental insurance, paid personal days (4), paid sick days (10), opportunities for professional development, and a retirement plan with a 9% employer contribution.

The position begins August 24, 2022 with new hire orientation and safety care training followed by a week of in-service activities. The first day for students is September 6, 2022.

Position Requirements
  1. Master's degree in Communicative Disorders, Speech Pathology or any related degree in the field of speech/language.
  2. Current speech certification from the PA Department of Education (or eligibility for an emergency permit).
  3. Experience working as a Speech/Language therapist within a special education program.
  4. Certification of Clinical Competency in Speech/Language Pathology is preferred.
  5. Ability to recognize the individuality and uniqueness of each student & treat him/her with respect & dignity.
  6. Ability to engage intellectually and physically in all components of the educational process
  7. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all constituents (administrators, colleagues, students, parents, and others)
  8. Knowledge of correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary
  9. Ability to use computers and perform clerical skills at a proficient level

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Perform formal evaluations and clinical observations of students to determine the type and frequency of speech and language services needed.
  2. Provide individual and group therapy for those students identified as needing educational/therapeutic intervention in order to facilitate success in the classroom.
  3. Develop and teach compensatory strategies.
  4. In addition to providing individual and group therapy, may provide support in the classroom and on field trips to reinforce and generalize communication skills in the community.
  5. Develop and monitor appropriate and measurable goals and objectives for each student receiving speech/language services. Evaluate students' progress in achieving these goals and objectives on a quarterly basis.
  6. Maintain up to date documentation pertaining to a student's attendance and progress in speech therapy.
  7. As a contributing member of the multi-disciplinary team, attend and actively participate in planning meetings, review meetings, and parent-teacher conferences.
  8. Provide consultation and training to teachers and staff on how to implement individual and/or classroom speech/language programs.
  9. Follow the guidelines for ethical behavior and professional standards of cares outlined by the American Speech and Hearing Association and the Department of Education for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
  10. Maintain personal knowledge base of diagnoses and treatment pertaining to those speech and language disorders applicable to assigned students through continuing education activities and participation in professional organizations and conferences.
  11. Demonstrate competency in each of the VFES core values: Communication and Listening, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Ethics, Professionalism, and Teamwork.
  12. Comply with all organizational policies and procedures including those stated in the VFES Policies & Procedures manual and additional verbal and written communications provided to staff members.
  13. Maintain a professional, confidential and ethical relationship with administrators, colleagues, parents, students, and others at all times.
  14. Attend and actively participate in staff meetings, in-service activities, and other meetings as required.
  15. Maintain proper credentials for assignment and remain educationally informed in all related areas including PDE regulations and state/national standards through continued professional study and attending workshops and conferences.
  16. Perform related duties, special assignments and projects as assigned.
