General Description

Incumbent is responsible for instructing academic courses in a secure juvenile detention facility to a transient population. Responsible for planning, organizing, and presenting activities contributing to educational, social, and physical development of students to enhance their self-worth and equip them with the basic knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to function in society. Students reside in the facility for an average of 23 days. Students may be of post-graduate age. Classes consist of multiple courses and multiple learning needs.

Essential Job Functions
  • Instruct academic content based on division curriculum and pacing guides;
  • Responsible for lesson planning, differentiation of instruction, student assessment and preparation of students for required SOL testing;
  • Serves as department chair for assigned academic area(s);
  • Attends and participates in faculty, department and required meetings;
  • Corresponds with home school teachers regarding student assignments;
  • Collaborates with other detention faculty and internal and external teachers;
  • Demonstrates commitment to improving professional competence;
  • Assesses student learning on an ongoing basis and alters instruction to meet group/individual needs.
  • Uses the curriculum of the district to plan daily instructional activities.
  • Prepares for classes assigned and shows evidence of preparation upon request of the immediate supervisor;
  • Maintains and upholds school and county policies and procedures;
  • Maintains records as required by law, system policy, and administrative regulations;
  • Cooperates with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods;
  • Assists in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials;
  • Works to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students, parents, and colleagues concerning both the academic and behavioral progress of all students;
  • Follows the guidelines established by the Detention Security staff with regards to classroom and facility security;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Requires considerable knowledge in concepts, learning theory and applications for assigned content area. Effective written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated ability to: develop instructional goals, design and deliver instruction and to assess students' learning. Requires skill in decision making, problem analysis, conflict resolution, interpersonal relationships and planning. Considerable judgment, tact, patience, sensitivity, and flexibility are required to deal with students from varied socioeconomic backgrounds and learning styles. Requires the ability to establish and maintain cooperative professional relations with others.

Requirements

Must hold a valid Virginia Teaching license with an endorsement in the assigned teaching area. Master's Degree in Education and teaching experience with at-risk youth preferred.
