General Description

Provides instruction for eligible students that will prepare them to pass the GED battery of tests or to prepare them to progress to a GED Prep class or to return to traditional school. Teaches both levels in the same classroom.

Essential Job Functions
  • Develops an individualized learning plan for each student based on assessment data and student's individual learning style. Monitors student progress on a daily basis; modifies the plan as needed. Utilizes computer software and on-line programs for program delivery.
  • Administers regular assessment testing of each student, which may include the TABE, Gates-MacGinite reading assessment, Stanford 9 math diagnostic and the official GED practice test.
  • Communicates regularly with Secondary GED liaison about concerns with student behavior, attendance and academic progress.
  • Works with each student on a daily basis in 5 core subject areas: writing, science, social studies, interpreting literature and the arts, mathematics, workplace readiness skills, and economics/personal finance .
  • Works with each student on career awareness and development activities.
  • Administers and enforces the classroom policies regarding attendance, behavior and academic progress.
  • Maintains contact with parents to discuss the students' attendance, behavior and progress.
  • Completes required paperwork such as attendance and phone logs, student progress reports and other documentation as required.

Qualifications

Working knowledge of the concepts, principles and methodologies of instruction. Working knowledge of academic curriculum for assigned subjects. Skill in the use of a personal computer, utilizing on-line programs as well as spreadsheet, database, presentation and word processing software. Demonstrated ability to develop instructional goals, to design and deliver instruction and assess student's learning. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Demonstrated ability in classroom management, decision-making, conflict resolution, positive behavior interventions, interpersonal relationship and planning. Demonstrated ability to work with students with varied academic needs. Demonstrated ability to regularly assimilate new students into class routine, while maintaining instruction for current students.

Requirements

Valid Virginia Collegiate Professional or Post-Graduate Professional license. Endorsement in English, English as a Second Language or Mathematics preferred.
