Job Summary:

Facilitate the communication between non-English speaking parents/guardians and others in the educational environment by interpreting and translating.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Serves as a resource for teachers, parents, and community members by encouraging, promoting, and sharing exemplary practices.
  • Translates responses from second language to first.
  • Reads written material, such as legal documents, scientific works, or news reports and rewrites material into specified language, according to established rules of grammar.
  • Receives information on subject to be discussed prior to interpreting session.
  • Helps parents of other nationalities to register students for school at ESOL Intake Center.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Demonstrates the professional and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with teachers, administrators, students, parents, and staff.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of a foreign (non-English) language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar, and pronunciation.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods. This includes alternative ways to inform and entertain via written, oral, and visual media.
  • Demonstrates active listening skills; giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Demonstrates excellent speaking skills; talking to others to convey information effectively.
  • Demonstrates reading comprehension skills; understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.
  • Demonstrates writing skills; communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience.
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand.
  • Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
  • Ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing.
  • Ability to identify and understand the speech of another person.
  • Ability to speak clearly so others can understand you.
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand.
  • Ability to concentrate on a task over a period of time without being distracted.
  • Ability to remember information such as words, numbers, pictures, and procedures.

Experience (number of years required):
  • Candidate must have the thorough knowledge of at least one (1) foreign language.
  • Candidate must be able to speak fluently at least one (1) foreign language.
  • Candidate must have three (3) years of experience interpreting a foreign language.

Salary: Interpreters are paid $25.00 per hour and work on an as-needed hourly basis. No benefits package is offered with this position.
