Main Purpose of Job

This is a professional position responsible for researching, developing and writing a variety of content to support the Maryland State Department of Education's Office of Communications and Community Engagement, ensuring consistent messaging and branding aligned with the agency's multi-year strategic plan and Blueprint for Maryland's Future initiatives.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Researches, develops and writes a variety of content to support the Maryland State Department of Education's Office of Communications and Community Engagement
  • Ensures consistent messaging and branding aligned with the agency's multi-year strategic plan and Blueprint for Maryland's Future initiatives.
  • Writes and edits content to be used in digital media (web postings), social media, speeches, newsletters, publications, reports, blogs, correspondence, memos and more.
  • Develops media advisories, releases, and fact sheets as needed.
  • Uses creative and persuasive writing to effectively express ideas; couple with visual needs.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.


Experience: Four years of administrative/professional work experience.



Note: Graduate education may be substituted for up to two years of the required work experience. Additional administrative/professional experience may be substituted year-for-year up to four years of the required education.


DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

  • Proficiency in researching, writing, and editing content for web, communications, and publications while ensuring consistent messaging and branding.
  • Proficiency drafting talking points/speeches and/or writing scripts for video/podcasts, and various communications and marketing pieces.
  • Two years of progressive experience in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations or related field strongly preferred.


*Applicants will be required to submit a writing sample in the interview process. Preferably the writing sample would be of a media release, blog post, or feature story.

Proof of eligibility to work in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act and travel throughout the state are required.
