The Office of Student Services (OSS) is responsible for providing a variety of supports and services to students in Cambridge Public Schools (CPS). Our programs are dedicated to ensuring equitable access and success for students with disabilities and students who have advanced learning needs. The Office of Student Services is comprised of special education, 504 services and the office of advanced learning.

The Role :
The Assistant Superintendent for Student Services reports to the Chief of Academics & Schools and is responsible for planning, managing, organizing and directing special education, 504, and advanced learner programs, services, and staff. The Assistant Superintendent provides system oversight, consistency, and vision for special education student services and programs and facilitates implementation of the district's mission and goals. The Assistant Superintendent supervises departmental staff; develops systematic approaches to improving student achievement based on testing and observation; works with outside agencies to meet all students' needs; and assists in implementing federal and state educational mandates. The Assistant Superintendent acts as a key member of the Superintendent's Executive Leadership Team.

Selected Responsibilities include:
  • District leader for Student Services relating to special education, 504, and advanced learner programs, services and initiatives.
  • Responsible for strategic planning and implementation of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development PreK-12 to maintain systemic consistency of services, and for coordinating connections between general and special education.
  • Hires, supervises and evaluates special education staff and assumes responsibility for department results. Coaches and directs department staff; regularly conducts individual and group meetings with departmental staff, Principals, department heads, and others.
  • Monitors and analyzes department operations and services for educational and financial effectiveness and operational efficiency.
  • Maintains current knowledge of educational trends, innovations, and practices and local/State/federal programs, laws, regulations and legislation related to special education; directs the modification of programs, functions, policies and procedures to meet local/State/federal requirements as appropriate; reviews, evaluates and implements new programs and educational practices as appropriate.
  • Provides consultation and technical expertise to the Superintendent, principals, administrators, teachers, staff, parents and the community concerning special education programs, services and activities.
  • Administers and monitors special education and advanced learner programs and activities to assure compliance with established curriculum standards and requirements. Directs the development of curriculum standards to meet student needs, as well as the development, scheduling and implementation of professional development and parent training activities.
  • Develops and administers the annual Student Services budget. Compiles, analyzes and reviews budgetary and financial data; controls and authorizes expenditures in accordance with district guidelines; researches and obtains grants and other outside funding.
Your Skill Set and Minimum Qualifications:
Master's degree in Education required; Doctorate degree preferred. Previous teaching experience and progressively responsible experience in special education and public school administration, preferably in a diverse urban environment, is desired. Massachusetts DESE Licensure is necessary at the Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent level, and Special Education Administrator or Supervisor/Director Pupil Services. Knowledge of the philosophies, principles, and practices relevant to public school administration is critical, as are state and federal curriculum standards/guidelines, current literature, trends, and developments in the fields of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development. Must possess knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, professional development standards, and program implementation processes. Thorough knowledge of special education law, regulations, policies, and best practices and models of curriculum integration/differentiation for all subjects is desired. The ideal candidate should have the ability to develop and execute long term goals and objectives; make administrative decisions in accordance with applicable laws, ordinances, regulations and school system policies and procedures; organize workflow and coordinate activities; make oral presentations before large or small audiences; research data and compile narratives or reports from information gathered.

Salary :
$172,075- $185,273, commensurate with qualifications and experience, along with a generous benefits package.
