Roanoke County Public Schools seeks applicants for Bus Drivers for the 2022-23 school year. This position is part-time, eligible for benefits. This position is on RCPS Pay Plan DBM Grade B22.

Position Description/Job Summary:

The School Bus Driver is responsible for safely operating the school bus according to a set daily schedule. He/she must ensure that the school bus is in good operating condition at all times, pick up and drop off students as per the schedule, maintain order and security on the bus and obey all laws, regulations and rules of conduct. It is critical for School Bus Driver to operate the School Bus in a safe manner. Position information is 5 hours/day, 188 day contract.

Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks:
  • Operate the school bus in a safe and effective manner in order to minimize the risk of injury, property damage or loss of life
  • Operate the school bus in a safe and efficient way according to all relevant Legislation, policies and procedures
  • Perform daily safety and maintenance checks
  • Perform minor maintenance duties such as changing the oil
  • Clean the bus
  • Ensure the bus is safely and securely stored
  • Advise the garage of any requirements for maintenance or repairs
  • Maintain schedules and maintain order on the School Bus
  • Pick up and deliver students as per a set schedule
  • Ensure students are aware of rules and responsibilities as passengers
  • Maintain order and discipline on the School bus
  • Make note of any behavioral or disciplinary problem
  • Practices confidentiality at all times
  • Maintains an attitude of mutual respect and courtesy
  • Communicates effectively orally and in writing
  • Reacts positively to constructive criticism and suggestions
  • Demonstrates initiative and motivation
  • Works independently or collaboratively with others in a wide variety of circumstances
  • Establishes professional relationships and communicates effectively
  • Demonstrates good safety habits and response to emergency situations

  • Performs multiple, highly complex technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions
  • Possesses strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Minimum Job Requirements/Qualifications:

The School Bus Driver is required to have a Class B CDL or Class B CDL learner's permit with air brakes, passengers, and school bus endorsements. A Criminal Records Check will be required. A DOE School Bus Driver Physical must be passed.

Education and Experience:

Have personal or professional experience with basic child care. Must have a valid Driver's License. Be able to pass a physical exam every year and a TB risk-factor screening yearly. Be able to comply with a background check as required. Have good verbal communication skills and visual ability to observe children. Be able to fulfill responsibilities under pressure, including during emergencies.
