  • JOB TITLE: Building Principal

    JOB STATUS: Full-Time (40 hours/week)

    REPORTS TO: Superintendent

    FLSA STATUS: Exempt

    JOB FUNCTION
    Primary responsibility is the improvement of instruction by providing leadership and administration which will motivate instructional and support personnel to strive for superior performance so as to provide the best possible opportunities for student growth and development, both educationally and personally; Supervise the operation of each attendance center as determined by the Board of Education.

    Maintain overall site operations; receive, distribute, and communicate information to enforce school, district, and state policies; maintain the safety of school environment; coordinate school activities; communicate information to staff; and address situations, problems and/or conflicts that could negatively impact the school.

    TERM
    Shall work two-hundred six (206) days each fiscal year, commencing and ending as determined by the Superintendent.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    This list is not all-inclusive and is only intended to illustrate the various responsibilities and duties performed.
    1. All duties and responsibilities as identified in the Illinois School Code.
    2. Implement policies, procedures, and/or processes for the purpose of providing direction and/or complying with mandated requirements; develop and administer the general school routine and coordinate all activities within the school building.
    3. Advocate for the students, staff, school, district, and public education (e.g. responsive to parents and community, creates a welcoming climate and culture, markets school programs, promotes and emphasizes support for parental involvement) for the purpose of encouraging and promoting community involvement and outreach.
    4. Compose a wide variety of materials (e.g. quantity reports, student activities, correspondence, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.
    5. Delegate responsibility for a variety of administrative functions to other personnel for the purpose of managing the workload more efficiently.
    6. Direct curriculum and instruction on-site (e.g. enforces grade-level standards, provides opportunities for enrichment and intervention, encourages differentiated instruction for all students, creates and supports learning communities, sets high expectations, educational leader, continuous improvement mindset) for the purpose of increasing student achievement.
    7. Identify intellectual, physical, social, and emotional needs affecting students' success in school; Take steps to direct and coordinate the efforts of teachers and parents with staff services and special education personnel.
    8. Participate in the selection of new teaching and classified personnel, licensed personnel, food service personnel, secretarial/clerical personnel, and other professional staff members assigned to the school; orient new personnel assigned to the school and District policies and procedures.
    9. Evaluate assigned personnel for the purpose of ensuring that standards are achieved, compliance with job descriptions is obtained, and performance is maximized; supervise school personnel for the purpose of monitoring performance, providing for professional growth and achieving overall objectives of school's curriculum.
    10. Facilitate communication (oral and written) between personnel, students, and/or parents for the purpose of evaluating situations, solving problems, and/or resolving conflicts in accordance with District policy.
    11. In compliance with Board Policy, as well as state and federal laws, rules, and regulations, address and resolve student behavioural problems violating the student code of conduct and Board Policy; maintain a standard of student behaviour designed to command respect and minimize school and classroom interruptions.
    12. Instructional Leader for the site and District (e.g. responsible for student achievement, focused conversations with teachers, daily classroom visits, shares and models effective teaching strategies, confronts classroom mediocrity, has high expectations, provides structure, strong disciplinarian, creates and maintains positive school climate (orderly), drive to move the school forward, and includes all staff in the team effort in promoting student achievement) for the purpose of providing support to site staff in order to increase student achievement.
    13. Manage school administrative functions (e.g. facility maintenance, budget, staffing, supervising extracurricular activities, monitor transportation services provided to students, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining safe and efficient school operations within district guidelines.
    14. Model for all staff (e.g. develops personal growth plans for self and all staff, ensures quality staff development at the school site, creates and supports learning communities, uses and models use of technology, models behaviours of a lifelong learner) for the purpose of creating an environment where staff and students are successful; observe, counsel, and motivate staff toward performances to attain the educational goals of the District.
    15. Present information (e.g. budget overviews, accounting processes, distribution formulas, school improvement plan, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information, gaining feedback and ensuring adherence to established internal controls.
    16. Promote the use of assessment data (e.g. monitors student progress, conducts and uses assessment data to guide instruction, uses academic support systems) for the purpose of increasing student achievement.
    17. Represent the school within community forums for the purpose of maintaining ongoing community support for educational goals and/or assisting with issues related to the school environment.
    18. Assists other personnel for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
    19. Chair meetings (e.g. curriculum, safety, site advisory, special district committees, etc.) for the purpose of coordinating activities and ensuring that outcomes achieve school, district, and/or state objectives.
    20. Maintain an educational philosophy and school climate which encourages a cooperative and participant attitude on the part of all staff and students.
    21. Continually evaluate existing programs and practices, curriculum content, and pilot or experimental programs.
    22. Attend professional conferences, seminars, and workshops in education and/or educational administration as per master agreement and/or Superintendent.
    23. Make recommendations to District Administration on any matter which will improve the excellence of the District; Affect or recommend changes that will lead to improved administration, supervision, and opportunity for student development.
    24. Perform the job duties for any position to which the Principal is laterally transferred during the term of the Principal's employment contract.
    25. Perform all other acts reasonable and necessary to accomplish his/her primary function as requested by the Superintendent.
    26. Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or Board of Education.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
    1. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred; experience with second language learners.
    2. Ability to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups.
    3. Perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.
    4. Analytical, interpersonal, diplomacy, organizational, leadership, supervisory, and management skills; apply assessment instruments.

    10. Ability to schedule a significant number of activities, meetings, and/or events.
    11. Routinely gather, collate, and/or classify data; analyze data utilizing a variety of complex processes; work with data of widely varied types and purposes; operate data software utilizing a variety of standardized methods.
    12. Flexibility to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; In working with others, independently problem solving to analyze issues and create action plans.
    13. Specific abilities to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: assess learning outcomes; adapt curriculum and programs to meet the needs of students; provide an effective learning environment that encourages student based motivation; communicate with culturally diverse groups, students, staff, and parents; create and maintain a climate of respect; establish effective relationships; promote a positive learning environment for students that involves staff and parents to promote high student achievement; utilize current technology; work as a part of a team; work with detailed information/data from various sources; advocate for the site.
    14. Perform advanced math, read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions.
    15. Working knowledge of budgets and funding, pertinent codes, policies, regulations and/or laws, and stages of child development.
    16. Promot child-centred environment; knowledgeable of age-appropriate activities, effective practices, and technology.
    17. Working knowledge of school system to include classroom experience.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
    Masters degree in Educational Administration or Curriculum and Instruction or related field. Experience at the elementary or middle school level teaching and administrative/supervisory strongly desired. Demonstrated experience in a culturally diverse educational setting. Any equivalent combination of training, education, or experience that meets the minimum requirements.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
    The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; and significant fine finger dexterity. The general job required 40% sitting, 35% walking, and 25% standing. The job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
