Upward Bound Teachers/Instructors
General Statement

The Upward Bound Program College Prep Program is designed to prepare students for higher education. The program targets a group of sixty rising 10 th , 11 th and 12 th grade students from Stamford High School who are low-income and/or potential first generation college students. The program will focus on a number of objectives, including academic school performance by

- Improving standardized test scores on state assessments for participating students

- Improving high school graduation rates

- Increasing participation in rigorous high school course work with the goal of encouraging college enrollment and ensuring success in college.

The Upward Bound Teacher will work with the Upward Bound Project Director and Upward Bound Advisor to support the students participating in the Upward Bound Program by providing support in literacy, numeracy, science, foreign language and college readiness skills for participating students during a 6 week summer program based at the UCONN Stamford Branch.

Responsibilities
- Assess the academic needs of participating students, and develop a plan to support their academic achievement, with the support of the Project Advisor.

- Effectively teach students and track academic progress as indicated in their Academic Progress Plans

Qualifications

- CT Teacher's certification grades 7-12 in the following areas:

o English/language Arts

o Math

o Science

o Foreign Language

o Guidance

- Other 7-12 teacher endorsements will be considered to teach enrichment courses.

- Three years of experience as a teacher

- Professional knowledge and experience with literacy instruction (it will be a plus to be knowledgeable about the SPS Reader's and Writer's Workshop model or training and experience with AP Courses, district ELA class syllabi and textbooks, or academic writing skills.)

- Professional knowledge and experience with mathematics instruction such as knowledge of district mathematics class syllabi and textbooks, and comfort with using online mathematics online resources in a blended model.

- Professional knowledge and experience with science instruction, including knowledge of district class syllabi and textbooks in general science, biology, chemistry and/or physics, including, if possible, training and experience with AP Courses.

- Professional knowledge and experience with world language instruction including knowledge of district class syllabi and textbooks in world languages, including, if possible, training and experience with AP Courses.

- Professional knowledge and experience in guidance and developing academic preparedness, college knowledge and academic tenacity to prepare students to be college ready.

- Excellent organizational skills.

- Training in Laying the Foundation a plus

- Professional or personal experience in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the target population from which project participants will be selected.

- Multilingual, preferred

Work Year

- The UB program will run as a college model with multiple opportunities for class offerings.

- Teaching hours are available Monday through Friday beginning on June 27 th and ending August 5 th .

- Hours can range from 4 to 20 hours per week depending on the number of classes taught and weekly staff meetings. Extra hours may be included for college visits and trips.

- Weekly hours are determined by teacher availability and program need. Teacher work hours and days for the 6 week program shall be preset before the start of the program and upon the mutual agreement of the teacher and the Upward Bound Program Director. - The enrichment courses will be determined by teacher interest. Applicants who wish to teach an enrichment course will summarize their proposed offering in the additional comments section of his or her application.

- Paid professional development day on Monday, June 6 th and Monday June 13 th from 3:30-5:30 at Stamford High.
