Elementary School Counselor

Under the direct supervision of the Executive Director and in collaboration with the Director of Academics, the School Counselor supports a high-quality academic program by ensuring the school's programmatic integrity and sustainability. The roles and responsibilities of the position are as follows:

Social and Emotional Wellness
  • Supports students experiencing problems, on both an emergent and preventative basis;
  • Assesses the counseling needs of the students, faculty and community and designs a program, including materials, addressing these needs;
  • Consults with parents, teachers, other educators, and community agencies regarding behavior change strategies for resolving student problems;
  • Ensures that the Second Step social-emotional curriculum is implemented with fidelity across the school, including assisting instructional staff in teaching as applicable;
    • Teaches Second Step Bullying Prevention Unit and Child Protection Unit to all classrooms;
  • Helps ensure that the school's Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program is consistently executed across the school, including the fulfillment of PBIS lesson plans and the maintenance of the students and staff acknowledgement system;
  • Facilitates student growth and development by training teachers to assist students;
    • Develops appropriate materials for staff development consistent with program goals;
  • Assists students in self-exploration and in developing self-awareness through whole-class, small-group and individual activities, interviews, sessions;

Academic Support
  • At the direction of the Executive Director, serves as the school's FTE Coordinator, ensuring that students are properly classified and enrolled into the appropriate academic programs and courses;
  • Partners with the school's MTSS Department, as requested, to provide interventions to students in line with their MTSS Intervention Plans;
  • Serves as member of students' IEP/504/Student Success Teams as appropriate, as determined by the MTSS Coordinator, Director of Academics or Executive Director;

Administrative Duties
  • Prepares and executes family education opportunities in alignment with the school-wide calendar;
  • Serves as an active member on the school's PBIS Committee, Attendance Subcommittee and Behavior Support Team;
  • Serves as the school's 504 Coordinator and Hospital-Homebound Coordinator and assumes all related duties;
  • Contributes to the Administrative Newsletter and/or maintains a unique newsletter, and communicates ongoingly to the various segments of the school community;
  • Schedules and attends parent conferences as appropriate;
  • Supports the admissions process of the school by periodically speaking with prospective families;

General Responsibilities
  • Assumes responsibility for the safety and physical well-being of all students in your charge at all times;
  • Demonstrates respect, grace and courtesy for all students and adults, and prepares visitors to the school to model the same respect while at the school;
  • Diligently and consistently meets deadlines for any tasks or paperwork required by the school;
  • Reports any and all accidents or incidents immediately and completes the written documentation procedure required by the school;
  • Strictly adheres to all mandated reporter requirements;
  • Fosters and maintains ongoing communication with team members and colleagues;
  • Maintains the confidentiality of all student records according to the law and school policies;
  • Returns telephone calls the same day if possible; checks email regularly and replies to school-related messages within 24 hours;
  • Maintains a professional relationship with school leaders and administration, colleagues, students, parents and families, community members, and the CEMCO Board;
  • Attends ongoing professional development in order to maintain skills required for the job;
  • Completes the professional learning goal-setting program as required by the state's evaluation system and the school;
  • Remains informed of and complies with state, district, and school regulations and policies for counselors, including the CEMCO Employee Handbook ;
  • Attends and participates in faculty meetings, other in-school events as required and after-hours meetings/events as reasonably deemed necessary by the school;
  • Is a positive role model to colleagues, trainees, and volunteers;
  • Possesses the physical capacity to work with children of primary or elementary age; and
  • Fulfills other duties as determined by the Director of Academics and the Executive Director.

Other Requirements
  • Required: a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field;
  • Required: valid Georgia Certificate in School Counseling;
  • Demonstrated computer competency, including the use of Microsoft Office, Google Suite and web-based apps;
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a member of a team;
  • Demonstrated ability in both taking and providing direction in a professional manner;
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
  • Ability to maintain employee confidence and protect school operations by keeping information confidential; and
  • Uses tact, patience and courtesy.

Work Schedule and Compensation
  • 40 hours per week minimum, full-time (0) position;
  • Weekly schedule determined by agreement with Executive Director;
  • Exempt employee;
  • Compensation on Teacher Salary scale, based on applicable Grade and Step; and
  • 190-day calendar.
