SUMMARY

This position assists in meeting the health care needs of a Special Education student according to district policies, school procedures and under the guidance of medical directives. This position requires a 1:1 support for a student and provides appropriate care for medically fragile needs within the school day, including support on school-based transportation.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Assists, promotes, and protects the optimal health status of a student.
  2. Works as a team member with school staff to help students obtain optimal physical, emotional, and social well-being necessary for learning, when applicable.
  3. Assists with and administers first aid care and specialized treatment in accordance with established guidelines for ill, medically fragile, and injured students.
  4. Assists in the safe administration of medication as mandated by state law and district policy.
  5. Prepares and/or maintains documentation and reports necessary to carry out the specialized medical procedures for Special Education student. There is no direct supervision provided by the school nurse. This role requires someone who is knowledgeable and competent in procedures as clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) tube feeding, tracheotomy suctioning, seizure management, pediatric ventilator supports, and possible assistance or supervision of toileting/diapering needs.
  6. Assists in maintaining students' documentation of health needs during the school setting and may need to communicate and collaborate with student's private medical providers in accordance with legal and district requirements.
  7. Follows established procedures to ensure confidentiality.
  8. Maintains clear and open communication with the school nurse and school staff concerning the needs of the medically fragile student under direct care and supervision.
  9. Participates in planning guidelines and procedures for emergency care of acute illnesses and injuries occurring while student is under the jurisdiction of the school.
  10. Assists with maintenance of order and discipline and a sanitary and safe environment in the classroom.


OTHER JOB DUTIES

  1. Participates in continuing education activities, building staff meetings, and staff development training as assigned.

  1. Required to ride bus with students.
  2. Performs related duties as assigned for direct care of student.

Required to visually concentrate on detail and be precise; maintain medical knowledge and skills in relation to expected needs of student assignment; required to deal with multiple parties (parents, school staff, private providers) and student in professional demeanor; travels within school district with the student; walks, runs, bends, and squats to attend to needs of a medically fragile student.

Qualifications : Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience
RN license is required; Associate degree in nursing from an accredited college/university or Bachelor in Science of Nursing is preferred; pediatric nursing experience is preferred; community health nursing or school based nursing experience is recommended; or, any combination of experience and training which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and ability required to perform the work.

*Knowledge of basic first aid and health care practices and procedures, basic symptoms of communicable and other childhood diseases.
*Knowledge of basic principles of human growth and development.
*Skill in identifying student health problems and communicating with school staff.

*Ability to perform duties in accordance with established guidelines, local, state, and federal laws.

Licenses/Special Requirements:
*Must possess a current Registered Nurse (RN) license, WA state preferred.
*Must possess first aid, CPR, and AED certificates prior to starting employment.
*Must have a valid driver?s license and access to personal transportation.
*Must maintain all licenses and certifications as a condition of continued employment.
