Counselor (Elementary)

Position Summary:

To provide comprehensive guidance program students in grade K-5 and consult with teachers, staff and parents to enhance their effectiveness in helping students; and provide support to other secondary educational programs.

To collaborate with school staff, parents and the community to positively impact the educational experience for all students by implementing a comprehensive schoolwide counseling program to create a safe and respectful learning environment.

Primary Responsibilities/Duties:
  • Provide education, prevention, early identification and intervention, to help students achieve academic success, develop an understanding of career opportunities and develop social/ emotional skills in response to issues they face.
  • Advocate for students at individual education plan meetings, student study teams and school attendance review boards, as necessary.
  • Provide counseling and support to students and families who are chronically tardy or absent.
  • Provide short-term individual and small group counseling services to students then assist the family with locating resources for on-going counseling services in the community if needed.
  • Consult with teachers to schedule and present school counseling curriculum lessons based on developmental needs and needs identified through data.
  • Interpret student records and maintain accurate records as needed.
  • Serve as a liaison between the school and Child Protective Services, Foster Care and other outside agencies that support the wellbeing of students.
  • Orientation, coordination and academic support for new students
  • Provide and support with tiered levels of instruction for students in conjunction with classroom teachers to support social emotional learning.
  • Consult with teachers about building classroom connections, effective classroom management and the role of noncognitive factors in student success.
  • Provide staff and family training on topics related to the schoolwide counseling program, and in-services as required.
  • Protect student records and information per state and federal regulations.
  • Consult with the school principal to identify and resolve student issues, needs and problems.
  • Analyze disaggregated schoolwide and school counseling program data.
  • Facilitate the transition of students from one educational level to the next.
  • Provide consultation in conjunction with classroom teachers to assist parent(s) with concerns related to students' school adjustment and performance.
  • Provide current information to parents and staff regarding available community resources and agencies.
  • Collaborate with other district counselors and staff to ensure alignment of schoolwide practices that impact all students.
  • Participate on the Crisis Response Team to support individual students, school, and district needs.
  • Work alongside other school staff to maintain a welcoming school environment and positive school culture.
  • Keep current in the profession by participating in professional growth opportunities and apply knowledge to areas of counseling, curriculum, instruction and assessment.
  • Perform other related activities or duties as assigned.

Education/Experience:

-- Master's degree in counseling.
-- Valid Washington State ESA Counselor's certificate.
-- Elementary counseling experience preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

-- Knowledge/experience of counseling guidance, instructional and behavioral intervention methods.
-- Knowledge/experience of community resources available to assist students and families with counseling needs.
-- Knowledge/experience of assessment, data gathering and interpreting techniques.
-- Knowledge/experience of laws, rules and regulations governing the education of children with disabilities. Experience working with at-risk student population.
-- Knowledge/experience with elementary curriculum and new state learning goals and assessments.
-- Experience and/or training with cultural, ethnic, language and learning diversity.
-- Ability to work cooperatively with administration, staff, students and parents.
-- Skill in oral and written communication.
-- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents.
-- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
-- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
-- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups and the general public.
-- Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
-- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
-- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
-- Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program.
