The Part-Time/Temporary High School Science Curriculum Writer will be responsible for the development of instructional materials for the High Science curriculum, including Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. This support position will report to the High School Science Curriculum Developer.

The part-time/temporary High School Science Curriculum Writer will be held accountable for the following responsibilities:
  • Evaluate and revise existing curricular materials to ensure alignment with Next Generation Science Standards, the Ambitious Science Teaching framework for science education, and to CPS rubrics for equity and content
  • Create new curricular materials aligned to the predetermined scope and sequence for the High School Biology, Chemistry, and Physics curricula, including but not limited to:
    • Mini-lessons
    • Slide decks
    • Student handouts
    • Example student responses
    • Formative and summative assessments
    • Assessment rubrics
    • Unit plans
  • Collaborate with writers in Chemistry, Biology, and Physics to ensure coherence of instructional practices, structure, and voice across content areas


In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, the part-time/temporary High School Science Curriculum Writer must possess the following qualifications:

Education Required:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Science Education, Physics, Chemistry, Biology or a related Science discipline from an accredited college or university
  • Master's Degree in the field of Education preferred.
  • Illinois (or reciprocal) Teaching Certificate preferred.

Experience Required:
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience writing and developing science curriculum is required
  • Three (3) years of experience teaching secondary science in a large, urban setting is strongly preferred
  • Experience with educational technology, digital media, and the effective integration of technology in instruction

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Deep knowledge of equity issues in education and a commitment to providing access to high-quality, NGSS-aligned digital curriculum for all students.
  • Strong knowledge of the following:
    • Best practices for science teaching and learning
    • NGSS Curriculum Development frameworks (i.e., NGSS Ambitious Science Teaching, NGSS Storylines, STEM Teaching Tools)
    • The CPS High School Science Curriculum that has been previously published on the Knowledge Center (preferred)
    • WIDA ELD Standards (preferred)
    • Understanding by Design principles for curriculum design
    • Universal Design for Learning principles for instructional design
    • MTSS and SEL best practices
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and effective problem-solving skills/strategies
  • Capable of collaborating with culturally and educationally-diverse teams.


Conditions of Employment

As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to:
  • Be Fully Vaccinated or Submit to Weekly COVID-19 Testing -Employees are required to be fully vaccinated within 30 days of their hire date. Full vaccination is defined as at least two weeks after your second shot of a two-shot vaccination course, or at least two weeks after a one-shot vaccination course. Unvaccinated staff must submit to weekly testing.
