Position Summary: The successful individual will work closely with students, families and special education teams at multiple schools to support student achievement and provision of services. This individual will demonstrate the ability to contribute to a dynamic and innovative team working effectively to enhance the educational program within the school and district. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent assessment and diagnostic skills as well as skills in IEP development and progress monitoring.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in education or special education (must possess a minimum of 30 college credits in special education).
  • Valid Alaska teaching certificate with an endorsement in special education - visually handicapped and/or orientation and mobility (Candidate must have appropriate credential for Teacher of Visually Impaired and Orientation and Mobility).
  • Recent experience managing large caseloads with a variety of exceptions.
  • Must be flexible and able to work with colleagues and community members in multiple settings.
  • Knowledge of current best practices in the field of special education.
  • Knowledge of many teaching strategies for diverse students.
  • Must demonstrate an appreciation for parental concern regarding students and be available to parents.
  • Behavior management skills.
  • Skills facilitating challenging/mediated IEP meetings to reach appropriate educational programs focused on students.
  • Demonstrated skills delivering SPED professional development in a variety of research-based strategies.
  • Knowledge of AK state SPED legal and procedural compliance.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills that promote positive relationships with students, parents and colleagues.

Preferred Requirements:
  • Master's Degree in special education preferred.
  • Recent experience teaching special education and general education.
  • Understanding of IDEA requirements.
