    Dean of Community Life

    Position Reports Directly to: Vice Principal for Student Development, Principal
    Position Type: 10 months - salaried
    Hours: Regular school days, some after-school extracurricular activities, and select summer dates to be determined by the Principal.
    Purpose
    To enforce the school's disciplinary code in a way that embraces our Catholic and Dominican mission through a more reflective lens of student mental and emotional health, which encourages a spirit of order and respect for the rights of others, thus providing an atmosphere in which the individual and educational process can flourish.
    Qualifications
    • Minimum five years' experience in a high school, possibly some teaching experience.
    • A Masters in Educational Leadership or similar degree.
    • A Professional Educator License (PEL) with a general administrative endorsement is required.
    • Organizational or family experience that would increase one's awareness and understanding of the social, psychological, intellectual, physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of the student and the corresponding pressures on students from family, peers, teachers, and friends is necessary.
    • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse population.
    • Possess a concern for, and knowledge of, high school faculty, staff, and administration concerns and pressures.
    • Has a sympathetic ear for student and faculty/staff concerns with the ability to support the truth while maintaining good relations between students and faculty/staff and between individuals within those groups.
    • Ability to build positive relationships among parents, students, and employees.
    • Possesses an awareness of the types of faculty/staff members and students in the school and a degree of confidence and patience needed for constructive encounters.
    • Proven ability to implement effective strategies to motivate and inspire students to succeed.
    • Familiar with current social media trends and platforms, how teenagers are using them, and the impact it is having on them.
    • Committed to Catholic, Dominican education and the mission of Marian Catholic High School.
    • Willing to become a Dominican Associate.
    • Trained in restorative justice is a plus.
    • Fluent in Spanish is a plus.
    Job Responsibilities
    Safety, Health, and Welfare
    • Properly addresses the improvement of student attendance and discipline with all relevant parties.
    • Works closely with school security officer to ensure school safety.
    • Enforces, modifies, and assists in the formation of principles of disciplinary procedures with the consent of the Principal.
    • Oversees after-school and Saturday detentions.
    • Supervises extracurricular events at the request of Administration.
    • Supervises school dances (Homecoming, Turnabout, Prom).
    Discipline
    • Serves as the school's truant officer and follows-up on truancy issues.
    • Enforces the student handbook including but not limited to dress code, tardy to class, habitual truancy, and modesty expectations for dance attire then contacts parents regarding extent of school penalty.
    • Refers students to Discipline Board as needed.
    • Serves in an informational and advisory capacity to Discipline Board.
    • Suspends students from classes or from school with consent of the Principal.
    • Readmits suspended students to classes or to school with consent of the Principal.
    • Renders interpretation of the dress code.
    • Determines probation for some disciplinary reasons.
    • Maintains disciplinary records including letters of probation, teacher referrals, suspensions, detentions, etc.
    • Handles all teacher referrals regarding discipline.
    • Withholds students from classes when necessary and may temporarily place them in study hall.
    Social and Emotional Support
    • Partners with school's counselors, social workers, nurses, and teachers to ensure student success.
    • Highly visible to the Marian Catholic community by monitoring hallways and school grounds before and after school as well as during changing periods and supervising the cafeteria during lunch.
    • Attends At-Risk meetings.
    • Provides data and insight for Tier 2 and Tier 3 meetings.


    Community Relations
    • Communicates clearly with students and families regarding expectations, consequences, disciplinary action, and follow-up.
    • Provides information to students on appropriate dance attire.
    • Conducts student/teacher or student/teacher/parent conferences upon request.
    • Contacts parents relative to disciplinary issues.
    • Assists faculty and staff to understand and enforce school rules.
    • Follows-up with teachers concerning resolution of disciplinary action.
    • Provides follow-up, including contacting the parents, on any discipline problems related to school unless specifically referred to Vice Principals or Principal, or falling under teacher's scope of activity.
    • Holds conferences and/or makes phone calls in reference to any major behavioral problems (after teacher has made phone contact with parent).
    • Sends forms to teachers as directed by Discipline Board to determine the status of students who are on probation, or to prepare for student Discipline Board hearing.
    • Notifies Attendance Clerk of any student suspensions.
    • Schedules and oversees all aspects of Saturday Detentions and Saturday Work Detentions.
    • Enforces Marian Catholic policies equitably, with an open mind and heart.
