Overview

The purpose of this job is to manage a variety of projects within the Communications Department and enhance communication between schools, families, and businesses in order to actively engage all stakeholders with Hamilton County Department of Education and its schools.

Responsibilities

  • Acts in a professional, respectful, and welcoming manner at all times.
  • Develops structures for parents and community to engage with the school system in a systematic fashion through a variety of communication channels.
  • Creates a customer-focused climate and provides quality services and support to schools, community, businesses, Superintendent of Schools, Board of Education, and other stakeholders.
  • Complies with applicable district, state, and federal codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
  • Plans and manages content for all HCDE social media channels.
  • Manages the email marketing workflow as well as content development for district emails.
  • Supports implementation of the District's strategic plan, specifically implementing strategies and action steps to improve performance indicators community engagement, with focused attention on parent engagement/satisfaction metrics, social media/website engagement, and direct outreach analytics.
  • Supports the ongoing development of a strategic communications plan for the District, acting as a project manager to ensure that all milestones and metrics are monitored and met.
  • Leads the development of both proactive and responsive communications campaigns for the district.
  • Crafts key messages to support the Superintendent and implementation of district initiatives.
  • Supports media relations activities including crafting statements, releases, advisories, coordinating interviews and establishing relationships with key media contacts.
  • Develops a robust social media strategy and manages the district's social media accounts, including content that supports the overarching communications strategy.
  • Authors and edits copy for various platforms including website, blog, newsletters, district publications, media releases, etc.
  • Coordinates work of Communications Team members to assure quality and deadline performance for projects assigned to the Team by leadership.
  • Prioritizes and improves internal communications to ensure educators and staff are informed and engaged.
  • Monitors public email to the HCS Communications team, providing responses when appropriate and/or forwarding questions/comments to appropriate departments for resolution.
  • Monitors public interaction with the district's social media channels to prevent violation of District policies and procedures, answer questions, and/or identify community trends in consultation with the Communications Officer.
  • Consults with family and community engagement team to promote programming, as well as make recommendations around activities to support the strategic communications plan.
  • Communicates through the proper channels to keep supervisor and other appropriate personnel informed of any issues or problems that may create media attention.
  • Plans and coordinates development of public information materials for the district; provides information to all stakeholders.

  • Develops plan for the expansion of the use of PowerSchool and other engagement tools.
  • Follows established procedures to ensure assigned areas are safe.
  • Works collaboratively with all stakeholders.
  • Attends work and arrives to work on time.
  • Maintains confidentiality.
  • Adheres to the Teacher Code of Ethics as defined by Tennessee Law.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Attends meetings as needed.
  • Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence as required.
  • Performs general/clerical tasks, which may include answering telephone calls, typing documents, making copies, sending/receiving faxes, filing documentation, processing incoming/outgoing mail, or running errands.
  • Operates a computer to research, organize, compose, and design press releases and various public information and education materials.
  • Operates other technology devices and uses a variety of social media platforms to perform essential functions of job.
  • Monitors inventory of equipment and supplies; ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities; initiates requests for new/replacement materials.
  • Attends meetings as needed.
  • Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence as required.
  • Performs general/clerical tasks, which may include answering telephone calls, typing documents, making copies, sending/receiving faxes, filing documentation, processing incoming/outgoing mail, or running errands.

Qualifications

Knowledge/Education/Experience:
  • Four-year degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or closely related field required.
  • Five (5) years relevant experience and/or training that involves social media, graphic design, copywriting, and public relations.
  • Previous experience with public schools preferred.
  • Or, any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Skills/Qualifications:
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with stakeholders inside and outside HCDE.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships inside and outside HCDE.
  • Ability to work in a highly visible and fast-paced work environment.
  • Ability to work under pressure and deal effectively with unexpected events in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Demonstrates understanding of traditional media and is comfortable working with social media platforms, including websites, Facebook, Twitter and other new media.
  • Ability to research, organize, compose, design and deliver press releases, public information, and education materials.
  • Ability to use handheld camera or other basic photographic device and to share online.
  • Ability to use multiple technology devices to complete essential functions of job.
  • Demonstrate excellent planning, organizational, problem-solving, decision-making, and time management skills.

Compensation:

Salary is based on a combination of relevant education and experience.
Minimum Salary - Grade 24
