This position is for a Temporary Educational Paraprofessional Specialist-ASL Interpreter for 6.5 hours per day, 7:35 am to 2:35 pm, District-wide.

Rate of pay based on experience and the Teamster's salary schedule.

It is a one-on-one student specific position, as an American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter, and will assist (under direct supervision) in the supervision and instruction of deaf and/or hard of hearing special education students, relieving teachers/counselors of routine clerical tasks, and assisting students by providing for special health care needs.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Essential Job Functions:
  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL)
  • Assist deaf or hard of hearing students in mainstream, resource or self-contained classrooms. Includes using fluent signing to interpret the lesson as taught by the classroom teacher, helping the student ask questions of the teacher
  • Assists deaf or hard of hearing students in the interaction and communication with hearing students and staff
  • Interpret for deaf or hard of hearing students participating in extra-curricular events and for adult deaf parent-teacher conferences
  • Works collaboratively by assisting teachers in assessment, curriculum implementation, student interactions, enforcing safe behaviors, and enhancing social growth of student in the classroom
  • Will interpret behavioral directions and physically assist when necessary
  • Ability to voice to sign and sign to voice or cue to voice and voice to cue
  • Adapts classroom work/homework under the direction of the teacher for the purpose of providing a method to support and/or reinforce classroom objectives
  • Assists teachers and parents for the purpose of implementing lesson plans and/or developing students' daily living and behavioral skills
  • Maintains classroom equipment, students' files/records as pertains to special education files/records for the purpose of ensuring a safe and appropriate learning environment
  • Performs record keeping and basic clerical functions, correcting student work, scheduling, copying etc. for the purpose of supporting the teacher or program
  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities
  • Confers with teachers, parents and/or appropriate community agency personnel for the purpose of assisting in evaluation of students' progress and/or implementing students' objectives
  • Participates in various meetings for the purpose of sharing information and/or improving one's skills/knowledge
  • Performs the essential of the job with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Completes work at assigned workstations
  • Consistently deals with people in a courteous and professional manner
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Employment Requirements:
  • Must have met the EIPA (Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment) standard of 3.5 or higher in both the written and performance skills assessment
  • Required passage of American Sign Language (ASL) test
  • Required completion of core competencies as defined by IDIEA
  • Prior job related experience as a classroom paraprofessional, paid or voluntary, preferred
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and hold a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent. In addition, must meet one of the following:
    1. Have received a qualifying score on the Education Testing Service (ETS) paraeducator assessment;
    2. Hold an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university;
    3. Have earned 72 quarter credits (100 level or above) or 48 semester credits (100 level or above) at an accredited college or university.

A copy of your high school diploma, a copy of your EIPA assessment score, and your official college transcript or ETS official score report must be provided upon hire.

Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required:
- Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance (cost paid by applicant).
- Sexual Misconduct Disclosure Form.
- First Aid/CPR Certification.
- Vaccine series, as required for health safety assurances.

Employment with the Chehalis School District is currently subject to Governor Inslee's Proclamation 21-14.1 regarding COVID-19 vaccination requirements and related exemptions therefrom.

Additional Job Information : Regarding Temporary Assignment Status:
This position is temporary and not subject to the terms or conditions of the Teamsters Bargaining Unit Agreement; includes pro-rated health benefits and sick leave; does not include paid holidays or personal days.
Temporary positions end on the last student day of the current school year
or upon change in program needs.

Qualifications : Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:
SKILL to perform basic clerical functions, perform basic arithmetic calculations, operate standard office equipment, including the use of basic computer applications, use English in verbal and written form, use correct grammar, punctuation and spelling. Skills to communicate effectively, problem solve.
KNOWLEDGE of principles of child development, instructional processes, problem solving methodology.
ABILITIES to sit for prolonged periods, understand and carry out oral and written instructions, maintain confidentiality of student records, fulfill schedules and meet deadlines, read/interpret/apply rules, regulations, policies, rapidly learn methods and materials used in a variety of instructional situations. Significant physical abilities include reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, near/far visual acuity and may include lifting/carrying 25 lbs.
