The Compliance and Advocacy Officer for Special Populations will provide compliance and advocacy support for special education students across our charter schools. They will manage and support the schools using the New Visions data tools to improve access and usability of data for special education and ENL students. They will also ensure the state and federal compliance requirements for students with disabilities are met at the charter schools.

Core Duties and Responsibilities:

Work across the organization and within our charter schools to:
  • Manage and streamline communication and tracking of the core set of compliance and advocacy related activities for special education students
  • Facilitate strategic data check-in meetings with school based leads to facilitate prioritizing, planning and organizing personnel to complete compliance and advocacy related activities
  • Manage the SpELL Management Tool and IEP Genie with schools and incorporate feedback from school users into the tool's design; work with designers to integrate critical data
  • Provide ongoing professional development to associate directors of special education, special education coordinators and leadership in charter in the areas of compliance and advocacy through regular in person meetings at the schools
  • Oversee the charter school's compliance with state and federal regulation to ensure IEP mandates are met and funded
  • Provide support to schools on how to write effective Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and monitor student progress towards their IEP Goals.
  • Keep all special education compliance resources developed for charters updated and in alignment with current state and federal regulations
  • Redesign and maintain the New Visions Special Education website and SPELL Tool Website to streamline distribution of all special education compliance, advocacy, and instructional resources for the charter schools
  • Liaise between charter schools and the CSE to advocate for particular students when applicable.

Work with other New Visions staff to:
  • Understand and monitor the implementation of these systems and structures
  • Analyze performance and compliance data and provide guidance and recommendations on how to respond to the data
  • Work across the network to align instructional support to student's IEP needs

Education and Experience:
  • Masters-level degree
  • Special education teacher certification required
  • ENL certification preferred
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in public education, preferably urban schools and secondary level

Required Skill Sets and Knowledge Base:
  • Expert knowledge of special education law required
  • Expert knowledge facilitating special education compliance requirements in charter schools, and parallel knowledge for ENL students preferred
  • Expert knowledge with Google Apps for Education required
  • Experience with, or an interest in, advanced formulas in Google Spreadsheets preferred
  • Leadership in providing professional development and supports to educators
  • Excellent written, oral, organizational, and interpersonal skills including strong facilitation skills
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively
