PRIMARY FUNCTION: As a SCCPSS District Groundsman you will maintain the appearance and functional soundness of our schools and facilities grounds. The groundsman is responsible for maintaining equipment and materials, and for ensuring adequate stock levels of consumables.

REPORTS TO: Director, Maintenance & Operations (through the Supervisor)

SALARY SCHEDULE: G-6
WORK DAYS: 250

REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Education Level: High school diploma or G.E.D. Certificate and 2-year work experience
  1. Experience, Skill, and Certification:
GROUNDSMAN
  • Must have or be able to learn grounds maintenance skills and techniques.
  • Weed trim, hedge, edge, and blow.
  • Ability to ride a zero-turn mower.
  • Be able to prune tree limbs and remove trees when necessary.
  • Ditch grading to ensure water flows properly.
  • Operate equipment needed to perform and complete a job.
  • Ensure worksite is properly maintained and free of hazards and debris.
  • Capable of receiving and following instructions and communicating with co-workers.
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT OPERATING KNOWLEDGE:
  • Able to read and adhere to labels, safety warning, and guidelines.
  • Attentive to detail and always alert to ensure safety.
  • Operating knowledge of and experience with personal computers and peripherals.
Operating knowledge of all electrical and gas lifts of various sizes.
Preferred
  • 5 years of experience in commercial and residential grounds maintenance.
  • Hard-working, detail-oriented and organized.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Ability to use the SchoolDude work order system
  • Ability to follow through to verify work has been completed and work orders are closed out properly
  • Ability to work with outside vendors, engineers, contractors, and consultants on projects affecting the landscape of the district grounds.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service to create a comfortable and safe environment which allows the SCCPSS customer(s) to study, teach and learn at all facilities
  • Perform regular inspections to identify problems with the grounds such as erosion, flooding, dead or leaning trees, etc.
  • Maintain inventory control of all tools needed for maintaining grounds
  • Knowledge of tools are needed for specific job and ensuring tools are clean, sharpened, in working order, and stored safely.
  • Ensuring the work area is free of kids, teachers, or any objects that may be damaged or cause damage.
  • Proper utilization of safety equipment to protect the groundsman from injury or death.
  • Preparing all areas by removing hazardous objects that may cause bodily harm or damage to equipment prior to starting work.
  • Making on-site preparations such as grading, leveling, picking up debris and trash.
  • Preparing work by raking, blowing, and removing hazardous materials.
  • Responsible for identifying, estimating, and prioritizing trade related improvements for district properties.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Ability to diffuse and manage volatile and stressful situations.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with frequent interruptions.
  • Personal computer and keyboarding skills.
  • Ability to be on call and/or respond to emergency calls.
  • Required to work overtime as needed.
  • Ability to promote and follow all Board of Public Education policies as well as building and department procedures.
  • Ability to communicate, interact, work effectively and cooperatively with people from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds.
  • Ensure all grounds equipment is cleaned, inspected, and secured after each use to include all gas-powered hand equipment, hand tools, riding equipment, vehicles, etc.
  • Identify and resolve equipment malfunctions.
  • Ability to work with manufacturers or field representatives as necessary to procure replacement parts for tools and equipment.
  • Ability to read blueprints and/or engineering instructions for the grounds trade assist with construction/remodel plan reviews of grounds projects.
  • Actively listening to customer preferences, maintain documentations of system installation and maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator.
  • All other duties assigned.
Must have a valid Georgia Driver's License
  • Must be able to lift 60 lbs.
  • Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions heat, cold, rain, etc.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Must pass a drug test and background check
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Incumbents will be considered "at will." Appropriate pay will be determined based on the Grade 6 and allowable experience as determined by Human Resources. This position is considered to be "essential personnel, critical staff" when there is an event that creates security challenges or disruptions to district operations. This position may be required to work during identified periods of an emergency as defined in Policy Regulation GBRB-R, Title: Professional Personnel Time Schedules. The work calendar will be 250 days. This position is Non-exempt and contributes to the Public School Employees Retirement System (PSERS)
