Job Description:

This job description describes in general terms the normal duties that the assistant will be expected to undertake. However, the job or duties described may vary or be amended from time to time without changing the level of responsibility associated with the job.
• Special education paras work under the overall supervision of their building
principal with direct supervision provided by special education teachers. The Speech-Language
Paraeducator works under the direct on-site supervision of the holder of a current speech-language
pathology license issued by the BASLP for a minimum of two hours a week. In-direct supervision is
required no less than 5% of the time per week and may include demonstration, record review,
evaluation of taped sessions and supervisory conferences.
• At all times, the supervision speech-language pathology certificate holder will
be available (via personal contact, phone or other immediate means) to the speech-language
paraeducator.
Scope of Responsibilities

The Speech-Language Paraeducator is to:
• Assist the SLP with speech-language screenings (without interpretation) following specified
screening protocols.
• Perform activities for sessions that are routine and do not require professional judgment, in
accordance with a plan developed and directed by the speech-language pathologist who retains the
professional responsibility for the client.
• Document student performance and progress toward meeting established goals and objectives or benchmarks and reporting the information to the supervisor.
• Assisting with documentation, material preparation and other duties as directed by the supervisor.
• Scheduling activities, preparing charts/records/graphs, and performing checks and maintenance of equipment.
• Acting as an interpreter for non-English speaking students and their family members when competent to do so.
Activities Outside the Scope of Responsibilities

The paraeducator may not:
• Administer or interpret tests or conduct evaluations.
• Participate in consultations, meetings or conferences without the presence of the supervisor or another designated, certified SLP.
• Develop, write, or modify IEPs or treatment plans in any way.
• Work with students without following the IEP or treatment plans prepared by the supervisor or without the required amount of supervision.
• Sign any document without the co-signature of the supervisor.
• Disclose clinical or confidential information to anyone not designated by the supervisor.
• Make referrals to other professionals or other agencies.
• Represent himself or herself as a speech-language pathologist.
Standards, Qualifications and Quality Assurance
• Be capable of physically assisting students with specials needs as required (positioning, lifting,
transferring, restraining, etc.)
• Have demonstrated ability to work effectively under the direction of others
• Have demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with others
• Have willingness to assume any responsibilities appropriate for the position
• Support the Mission Statement of Spotsylvania County Public Schools
• Behave and speak in a professional manner at all times.
• Set a good example in terms of dress, punctuality, and attendance.
• Attend staff and team meetings.
• Be proactive in matters relating to health and safety.
• All other duties as assigned.
Evaluation: Each educational support staff member's job performance shall be evaluated by his/her direct supervisor. The evaluation process includes day-to-day observations and such supervision/communication as is applicable to the job classification. Supervisors shall provide employees an opportunity to discuss performance. As appropriate, supervisors should discuss with employees job performance issues that require timely attention.

Salary: This is a 10 months position with no benefits. Starting salary $14.25 an hour.
