Overall Purpose
The job of District Translator and Interpreter is done for the purpose/s of providing English/Spanish translation services for district staff, teachers, students, and families to facilitate communication. The position, under the supervision of the Chief of Community Engagement & Strategic Partnerships will act as a community liaison and will provide written translation of general, technical, educational materials and other documents between English and Spanish. This position provides effective communication between the school, the District, the student's family, and appropriate public agencies. Provide oral and written communication from Spanish/English and vice-versa for various meetings, documents, and activities

Direct Supervisor

Essential Functions
  • Assist the school system in communicating with students and families in understanding the system and/or school requirements and processes for the purpose of supporting student learning and achievement.
  • Organizes interpreting services (parent/teacher conferences, open house, etc.) for the purpose of meeting the needs of families and schools.
  • Translate both written and verbal communication from English to Spanish and Spanish to English
  • Provide interpretations as required by phone conferences or in person.
  • Translate district-wide letters and documents.
  • Act as a community liaison by working collaboratively and establishing and maintaining effective communications and positive relationships with the community, school, and District staff
  • Proofread other translations and provide feedback
  • Assists Parent Information Center for the purpose of registering non-English speaking families.
  • Provides technical support to schools for the purpose of accessing translated materials from the Department of Education (TransAct).
  • Assist and provide support and coordination for Spanish Speaking families with required procedures: enrollment, orientations, registration, classroom screenings and child assessments.
  • Translates critical information for presentation to parents on websites and other public venues.
  • Builds partnerships with local agencies (Catholic Social Services, UGA's Romance Languages Department, etc.) for the purpose of developing a volunteer program for interpreting.
  • Serve as a liaison between school and community.
  • Responds to emergency needs for translation for all schools.
  • Assist district staff with verbal communication with Spanish-speaking families (e.g., parent activity events, home visits, parent-teacher conferences, etc.)
  • Assist in the development and release of communication and preparation by revising, translating, and delivering requested documents and/or telephone communications district-wide, to individual building sites, and homes of our students
  • Serve as a resource to staff in supporting Spanish speaking students and families.
  • Assist families in obtaining appropriate community services that fall outside of the school or educational setting
  • Support programs and activities that serve Spanish speaking students and families.
  • Provide resources and referrals to Spanish speaking families as requested to support their efforts and family partnership plans. Set/monitor appropriate family and/or individual goals.

Requirements
High school diploma or GED equivalent
College training and/or academic preparation in both English and Spanish preferred
Bilingual and bi-literate in English and Spanish
Valid Georgia driver's license
Reliable transportation between sites

Physical Requirements
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity.

Generally the job requires 75% sitting, 15% walking, and 10% standing.
