POSITION SUMMARY: The Grades 6-7 Math Lab Teacher is a highly-qualified individual who works with students in grades 6 and 7. The goal of the math lab teacher is to ensure that students are able to master grade level standards and curriculum by instructing students through a hands-on learning approach that supports the curriculum and instruction. The math lab teacher will plan instruction around the shifts in common core math standards to include fluency, deep understanding, coherence, and application. This teacher will work closely with the math classroom/content area teachers.

RATIONALE: In alignment with our strategic plan, we are seeking to increase the level of rigor in all content areas while improving mathematic skills across all grade levels K-12. We will accomplish these strategic objectives with the following initiatives which are to be supported by the Mathematics Lab Teacher (6th/7th grade):

  • Plan, prepare and deliver lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate active learning and mathematical strategies.
  • Manage student behavior in the classroom by establishing classroom norms, expectations, and procedures.
  • Observe and evaluate student performance and development.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Use MAP Skills as a Resource.
  • Respond to data to meet the needs of all students for a fluid RtI Process.
  • Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students from diverse cultural, economic and learning abilities.
  • Establishes and maintains a culture of learning so that all students can grow and achieve.
  • Evaluates and monitors the educational progress of students using data to make informed instructional decisions.



QUALIFICATIONS/KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Principles, theories, methods, techniques, and strategies pertaining to teaching and instruction of middle school students and mathematics.
  • Knows and has used a variety of intervention models, current programs, and strategies.
  • Adolescent development and behavior characteristics of middle school students.
  • Behavior management and restorative justice, techniques, methods and conflict resolution procedures.
  • Demonstrates success in collaborative teaching, managing a mixed-ability classroom and facilitating performance-based learning.
  • Knows and has used the EngageNY math modules.
  • Provide effective learning experiences for students with a wide range of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Effectively assess and progress monitor the educational needs of students in order to design, develop and implement sound educational plans.



EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Initial/Professional/Permanent certification in applicable grades/subject area required, or certification in process.
  • 3 years of teaching experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of Expeditionary Learning a plus.
