General Description:

The Student Supervisor Instructional Assistant (SSIA) and Physical Education Instructional Assistant (PEIA) is considered part of the Elementary educational team. The employee in this position should embrace the AAS Mission, Vision, Core Values.

Student Supervisor Instructional Assistant: The Elementary Student Supervisor Instructional Assistant (SSIA) is considered part of the Elementary educational team. This responsibility involves collaboration with the ES Leadership Team and ES Staff to develop schedules and plan safe, engaging times for the recess and outdoor spaces, including but not limited to, the fields, green top, and ES playground. The SSIA assists in the development and communication of expectations and procedures for students, for both indoor and outdoor recess spaces. The particular talents and areas of expertise of the SSIA should be developed to support safe student physical and social interactions during recess, thus increasing the effectiveness of student learning. The employee in this position will be outside a significant portion of each working day, during all four seasons.

Physical Education Instructional Assistant: The Physical Education Instructional Assistant (PEIA) is considered part of a team working alongside teachers in the PE classroom. The responsibilities of the PEIA will vary depending upon the specific classroom context, grade level and on the requirements of the individual teacher. It will include preparing material for lessons, setting up spaces, making sure equipment is safe and in good shape, supporting lessons with students by assisting the teachers during delivery of content, taking small groups for instruction. The particular talents and areas of expertise of individual teaching assistants should be developed to increase the effectiveness of student learning and to support excellent classroom practice. Each teacher has responsibility for the day-to-day supervision of the assistant designated to his or her subject. Based on the venue of the PE activity, classroom support will be provided either inside or outside, during all seasons.

Qualifications and Requirements:
  • University degree
  • 2+ years of professional experience Prior experience working with children
  • Legally residing and able to work in Moscow, Russia.
  • Speak, read and write in English fluently, according to the CREF standards, C1 or a C2 level, as determined by the external AAS testing provider
  • Must be eligible to receive a security clearance certification (provided by AAS)
  • First Aid Training - higher level, (provided by AAS)
  • Child Protection (provided by AAS)
  • Love & Logic (provided by AAS)

Preferred Qualifications :
  • Prior experience working in a school with students
  • Prior experience working with children in sports or physical activity setting
  • Substitute experience at AAS
  • Bilingual- Russian or other language(s)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Technology skills, familiarity with a variety of common applications and programs
  • Multi-tasking skills (frequent interruptions are the norm)
  • Physically able to work outside and stand/move around for a significant portion of the working day
  • Management of large groups in open spaces
  • A physical and mental capacity for constant activity, either routine or special projects
  • Sensitivity to cultural diversity

Essential Duties:

Student Supervisor Instructional Assistant:
  • Proactively supervises ES students; makes rounds through all areas of the campus on the supervision schedule according to an established procedures
  • Ensure that all the ES classes follow the recess schedule and duty schedule
  • Proactively help students to prevent and de-escalate potential conflicts; resolving issues on the playground, field, green top and around the campus; helping those on duty to appropriately use effective behavior management tools
  • Develop positive and caring relationships with students within the boundaries of our Child Protection Code of Conduct
  • Sending/taking students to the ES office if the issue repeats, escalates, or the students do not follow the adopted AAS rules, instructions
  • Actively monitoring and watching, engaging students on the spaces during recesses and field times
  • Checking the venues (playground, fields, green top) after recess times to determine if there are any safety hazards, broken equipment, lost items, etc.; report these according to established procedures; report any dangerous or broken equipment to the appropriate AAS staff member(s) or department using established systems
  • Organizing, inventorying and ensuring playground equipment is put back into storage/place use
  • Taking lost items to the Lost & Found on a regular basis
  • Prepare for the next recess according to established procedures
  • Liaise with teachers, counselors and other staff to address student social and emotional needs including those related to health, clothing, and general well-being;
  • Supervise or assist students during the lunch period by encouraging proper table manners, respect of adults and coordination of logistics;
  • Supervise/assist students during regular recess times as well as during additionally scheduled duties;
  • Collaborate with staff to create a positive school environment that will emphasize: safety, a child-centered, caring atmosphere, and a sense of order;
  • Coordinate if the recesses are indoor due to weather; publicize/communicate this quickly to the classroom teachers and instructional assistance
  • Put up obvious signs in the front entrance and on the recess glass doors if the first morning welcome recess is inside, coordinate with the Community Relations department to create and print signage as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Physical Education Instructional Assistant:
  • Work with students individually, in groups or as a class, particularly students with special needs.
  • Responsibility may include: assisting with academic work, assisting with creative activities, developing fine/gross motor coordination, observing and reporting student progress to the teacher, assisting with classroom management in a variety of field/gym environments
  • Liaise with teachers to address student social and emotional needs including general well-being;
  • Work with teachers to create a positive school environment that will emphasize: safety, a child-centered, caring atmosphere, a sense of order, and attractive displays of student work;
  • Assist teachers in preparing resources, setting up spaces and material (some of which are heavy and/or large), repairing material.
  • Other duties as assigned
