Middle School Health, Science Teacher Job Description

immediate opening, start date November 2021

Middle School consists of grades 6 - 8. The person in this position must be flexible, qualified & capable of instruction in a variety of levels across the Middle School. Class sizes range from 8-18, typically averaging 12 students. The number of students per class is dependent upon student enrollment/selection of each course, and may vary from semester to semester.

Education and Experience

Requirements
  • Two or more years of full-time, full-year experience preferably at the Middle School level
  • Academic background or experience in the area to be taught
  • Certification in Education/ subject areas of Health + Science or other subject(s)
  • Commitment to being an integral part of the AAS learning community

  • Experience and willingness to lead co-curricular activities

Through good teaching practice and modeling we facilitate the students' intellectual, social, emotional and physical growth through the Middle years and beyond. Indeed, students' well being is at the center of our teaching practice and as such, teachers must be committed to working collegially, collaboratively, energetically and enthusiastically to enhance the learning environment for students, staff and community. Teachers are responsible for the successful creation, delivery and assessment of lessons as well as monitoring and communicating student progress. In addition to the above, we value teachers who strive for excellence, communicate in an effective and timely fashion, have a sense of humor, demonstrate flexibility, accommodate different learning styles and sponsor extra-curricular activities.

• Teaching
  • Use a variety of teaching strategies and assessment tools with a focus on the whole student as well as deeper understanding
  • Effectively differentiate to promote optimal learning for students ready to be further enriched as well as students with learning differences
  • Prepare meaningful learning feedback including quarterly student reports as well as mid quarter reports
  • Teach effectively in a 5 of 8 block format

• Advisory
  • Serve as an Advisor to a group of students
  • Support and facilitate community service, teambuilding and individual student growth
  • Advisory meets every day for 30 minutes and is facilitated by the guidance counselor and grade level leaders but is delivered by the faculty

• Electives
  • An elective is analogous to an exploratory, current electives may be accessed on the school website
  • As part of the teaching load teachers may teach/lead an elective

• Discovery Week
  • Serve as a leader/chaperone to plan, deliver and chaperone a week-long field trip
  • Trip locations are around the Baltic Region, Black Sea Region and the far reaches of Russia

• Extra-Curricular
  • Sponsor one extra-curricular activity
  • There are many opportunities to coach, facilitate and lead a variety of sports, arts, activities and community service
  • We participate in CEESA (Central Eastern European Schools Association) for sports, arts and activities

• Other Responsibilities
  • Participate in weekly faculty meetings (divisional or school-wide)
  • Engage in full faculty, MS faculty, grade level, subject area, planning meetings
  • Participate in duty rotation
  • Serve on a variety of working committees related to curriculum, policy, student issues, etc. on an as needed basis
  • Other duties as assigned
