General Description

Responsible for assisting the Head Start classroom teacher in implementing the instructional and socialization programs. Tasks performed are specific and recurring; procedures are outlined in detail; employees have some control over their own work, but ultimate responsibility lies with the assigned teacher.

Essential Job Functions

  • Assists teacher in supervising children during instruction; helps develop instructional materials.
  • Carries out program activities with small groups of children, including instruction, centers. gross motor skills, play activities, teaching personal hygiene, and social skills.
  • Prepares breakfast, lunch and snacks for children during meal time; supervises children during these meals.
  • Monitors behavior; enforces disciplinary rules; helps students with personal care and hygiene.
  • Makes home visits with the teacher.
  • Performs other duties as assigned related to the Head Start program.


Qualifications

Knowledge of Head Start programs, standards and requirements. Ability to help teach classroom lessons. Ability to communicate effectively with small children. Ability to work effectively with parents, students, staff and community agencies to implement programs. Ability to enforce discipline. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to work independently with limited supervision, including high pressure and difficult situations.

Requirements

  • Requires at least (I) a child development associate credential; (II) enrolled in a program leading to an associate or baccalaureate degree; or (III) enrolled in a child development associate credential program to be completed within 2 years.
  • College transcripts must be submitted to be considered for this position.
