SUMMARY

Under general supervision, coordinates, develops, implements and monitors district-wide student wellness programming, including oversight of district student wellness policy assessment; collaborates with administrators, school site staff, parents, students, and community service providers to develop comprehensive and inclusive strategies that address student health and well-being.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Oversees annual implementation of the district-wide student wellness policy assessment as required by federal Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010.
  • Provides on-site technical assistance and consultation to school wellness champions, school staff, parents, and community members involved in completing the annual wellness policy assessment and creation of school health action plans.
  • Assesses the district wellness policy every three years; monitors school compliance, compares district policy to model wellness policies.
  • Co-facilitates district-level wellness committee; recruits members as needed.
  • Builds and maintains positive working relationships with internal and external school community members.
  • Represents department at community events, forums, and other activities to promote visibility in the community and share resources.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates capacity-building student wellness trainings for district staff.
  • Develops and maintains partnerships with REAA to analyze wellness assessment data and produce reports to the community.
  • Researches and writes grants and proposals for development and expansion of district programs that impact school success for students.
  • Maintains website, develops original newsletter and social media content; contributes to department marketing efforts.
  • Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with students, clients, visitors, and MPS staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment
  • Enthusiastically promotes the Superintendent's goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, records and MPS information.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines Bachelor's Degree in Public Health, Education or related field; AND two (2) years of program development and coordination experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.

Knowledge of:
  • USDA Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010
  • Center for Disease Control (CDC) Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child model
  • School health and wellness best practices
  • Rules and regulations of the Minnesota Department of Health, Minnesota Department of Education, Food and Nutrition Services, and other governing agencies.
  • Principles of record keeping and records management.
  • Safety rules and regulations.
  • Administering educational and school support programs.
  • Personal computers utilizing standard and specialized software applications.

Skill in:

  • Engaging, educating, and motivating students, staff, and community members.
  • Using initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines.
  • Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands.
  • Effective verbal and written communication
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers, families, advocates, and representatives from community groups and government agencies.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

A valid Minnesota State Driver's License may be required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT Work is performed in a standard office environment which requires occasionally lifting such articles as file boxes or heavier materials with help from others and/or lifting and carrying light objects frequently. A job in this category may require walking or standing to a significant degree or may involve sitting most of the time with long periods of computer work and heavy phone usage.
