Special Education Teacher – Autism Job Summary: The Hawaii State Department of Education believes that professional educators are the cornerstone of our mission to prepare Hawaii's students for college, career and community. HIDOE is looking for Special Education Teachers - Autism who are caring, competent, effective, and committed to obtaining the best results for our students. Hawaii is a special place with students representing a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Therefore, the professional staff should be cognizant of the enriching contributions that students can make to the teaching-learning environment. Please note that we do not post specific vacancies for teaching positions, as applicants are applying to be part of a teacher applicant pool.

Requirements:

Education: To qualify for a teaching position with the Hawaii State Department of Education, applicants must have earned a bachelor’s degree and completed a State Approved Teacher Education Program from a regionally or nationally accredited college/university which includes student teaching in an elementary through high school setting. Other ways in which you may qualify is if you:

  • completed a state approved alternative licensure program
  • have a standard license and have taught under that license for three out of the last seven years in the state that issued the license
  • completed a teacher education program in another country for which transcripts have been evaluated by an acceptable foreign credential evaluation service

If you do not meet the above qualifications, you do not qualify as a certified teacher, school counselor or school librarian. However, if you possess a minimum of a bachelor's degree, you may apply for a teaching position, in your field of study.

Teacher Salary Schedule:  https://www.teachinhawaii.org/salaries-benefits-and-support/ We offer a Special Education differential of $10,000 on top of your base salary if you hold a valid Hawaii Teaching License in Special Education and teach in a designated Special Education line.  The full amount is given if the start date is at the beginning of the school year (prorated).  Additionally, we offer $3,000-$8,000 hard to staff differentials for teaching in certain geographical areas and a one-time $2,000 relocation bonus is provided for relocation from outside of Hawaii (while funds remain).
