GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK

Under the supervision of the Adult Education Lead Teacher and in collaboration with the Coordinator II - Adult Education and Credit Recovery Programs, the Adult Education Teacher provides instruction virtually or in person in academic areas (math and science) for all assigned students. Instruction is based on the individual needs of each participant.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Inspire adult learners to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to participate effectively in today's economy and society
  • Teach basic academic subjects to adult learners using special help programs to improve scholastic level
  • Select and teach assigned subject relating it to everyday life of individual adult learners
  • Confer with school counselors to obtain additional testing information and to gain insight on adult learner behavioral disorders affecting the learning process
  • Design special help programs for low achievers and encourages class group collaboration
  • Attend professional meetings, write reports, and maintain records
  • Conduct instruction in subject area(s) for assigned adult learners
  • Provide assistance to adult learners to facilitate their learning of instructional objectives/goals
  • Utilize a repertoire of teaching methods
  • Participate in staff development training workshops, seminars/meetings, as appropriate
  • Keep abreast of instructional innovations, curriculum trends, research information, etc. and select materials for lessons
  • Participate as a team member with professional colleagues for school-based enhancement of instructional initiatives
  • Assess learner progress on objectives
  • Organize instruction, taking into account individual differences among learners as the differences relate to such elements as capabilities, styles of learning, and rates of learning
  • Perform other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Must possess the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Must possess excellent organizational, planning, and human relations skills. Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with adult learners, specialists, program managers, school administration, and business/community partner agencies. Individual must possess knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment appropriate for instructing adult learners in obtaining a GED, Career Readiness Certificate, and Digital Literacy credentials. Must demonstrate a commitment and ability to serve a diverse community, including low-income families and English Language Learners. Self-motivated and able to work at a standalone satellite site. Ability to manage and maintain a professional classroom, providing instruction to adult participants whose basic skills are below the twelfth grade level. Possess working skills in the use of technology to deliver distance education instruction, communicate via e-mail and teach basic computer skills to the adult learner.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license with appropriate endorsement.
