GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK

Under the supervision of the Chief Academic Officer, the Coordinator II - Curriculum and Instruction serves as the content instructional leader, ensuing that a written curriculum and aligned pacing guides, instructional materials, and instructional guides are accessible to teachers, parents, and students. Responsible for providing leadership and assistance in implementing the essential curriculum, analyzing formative assessment data, and conducting professional learning workshops for enhancing teaching strategies, in elementary, middle, and high school.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Lead designated content area to ensure that the instructional program is being implemented with fidelity
  • Provide leadership to assure correlation between district curriculum and state/national standards
  • Facilitate planning sessions to focus on student achievement data and instructional implications
  • Develop, coordinate, and monitor the program of instruction for academic programs and oversee updates of the curriculum
  • Preview new instructional materials and arrange for piloting by teachers
  • Model instructional strategies and the implementation of the curriculum in classes and provide opportunities to engage in reflective discourse
  • Study and evaluate new instructional techniques for possible use by classroom teachers
  • Assist in the selection of K-12 instructional materials
  • Develop and implement follow-up plans for curriculum revisions and instructional materials adoptions
  • Coordinate projects with other curriculum coordinators, program support staff, and administrators
  • Assist with coordination of instructional support for new teachers
  • Support the effective use of technology in the classroom, including integration of technology into instruction
  • Attend appropriate central office and school meetings; work with department heads, and share information with content/subject field teachers
  • Provide instructional, professional, and technical assistance for improvement of student achievement
  • Analyze departmental data to help teachers improve areas of instruction
  • Work closely with the literacy team to integrate literacy skills in the content area
  • Arrange for collaboration between content area teachers, including English Learner Specialists, within the department and across grade levels
  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and content support specific to professional learning for content teachers
  • Collaborate with school leaders and central office staff and represent content area needs of the school
  • Participate in the planning and implementation of staff professional learning activities
  • Dialogue with mentors and consulting teachers assigned to teachers within the department when appropriate
  • Perform other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Thorough knowledge of curriculum, assessment and instruction
  • Strong skills in collecting and analyzing formative and summative data sources
  • Proven record as a master teacher
  • Demonstrated knowledge of theories of effective teaching
  • Thorough knowledge of the Virginia SOL
  • Content area knowledge and integration of SOL
  • Current in content, scientific/research-based instructional theories, practices, and strategies
  • Demonstrated ability to observe and evaluate teaching practices
  • Ability to relate easily to teachers and administrators and to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and with a variety of groups
  • Excellent oral and written communication and collaboration skills
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Knowledge of theories related to the adult learner
  • Ability to observe and assess the transfer of training and learning into practice
  • Superior organizational skills
  • Ability to problem-solve independently
  • Proficient in the use of technology
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Graduation from an accredited undergraduate program in education supplemented by a master's degree in education administration or a related field preferred
  • Must hold or be eligible for Virginia teaching license with endorsement in appropriate area(s)
  • Minimum of five (5) years of successful classroom/teaching experience
  • Successful experience in teaching/training adults
