Stage Technical Coordinator

General Description:
The Stage Technical Coordinator is responsible for all lighting, sound, and other technical aspects of during school and after school use of the school auditorium. In addition to technical knowledge of the systems, including sound and lighting equipment available for use in the auditorium, this individual is also responsible for organizing, advising and supervising the student tech crew. The tech crew and Stage Technical Coordinator work collaboratively with the school's theater group, the group's faculty advisor, the group's parent association, show directors, and other theater professionals in order to design and build the sets, as well as run lighting and sound for all school theatrical productions. These productions include (but are not limited to) the fall drama, Connecticut Drama Association annual competition piece, and the spring musical. The tech advisor must ensure that all student members are properly trained to use power tools and operate technical equipment, and must supervise them during all activities in the auditorium, including rehearsals and actual performances. The position requires an organized and collaborative individual willing to work a significant amount of hours outside of the school day with both students and staff members for the entire school year.

Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for supporting all in-school assemblies in the auditorium
  • Maintains a detailed inventory of all equipment and supplies
  • Coordinates with vendors for replacement of lighting and sound equipment
  • Troubleshoots all technical problems regarding lighting, sound, and construction of set pieces
  • Coordinates and provides the technical assistance for outside community organizations that use the high school facilities
  • Advises the student tech crew and holds tech meetings with said students as needed
  • Collaborates frequently with the Playmakers faculty advisor and the Parent Production Group to ensure all technical needs for performances are met
  • Collaborates with directors of productions and professional technical staff (such as a set designer, lighting designer or sound designer) in order to facilitate student involvement with technical aspects of production
  • Supervises the student tech crew during after school Northstar productions and outside organization's events to ensure that all students are appropriately trained and constantly supervised

Preferred Skills:
  • Building/construction including use of power tools
  • Working knowledge of theatrical stage lighting*
  • Working knowledge of theatrical sound equipment*
    • or a willingness to put in the time within the first year to learn the systems

Hours:

During the school day:
  • May be required to assist with in-school assemblies

After school:
  • Holds tech crew meetings with students as needed
  • Supervises all tech crew activities during Northstar productions and other outside organization events
  • May require late evenings during building days and tech week of productions

Compensation:
Annual Stipend per SEA Contract
