SUMMARY
Under general supervision, Custodians assistwith cleaning and maintenance for inside and outside of Minneapolis Public School (MPS) buildings.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Employees are required to be in attendance and prepared to begin work at their assigned work location on the specified days and hours. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Maintaining building interior by: washing, dusting, and cleaning mirrors and fixtures; washing windows, counters and walls; sweeping, vacuuming, scrubbing, and waxing floors; cleaning and supplying lavatories; and replacing light bulbs.
  • Maintaining building exterior by: removing litter;mowing, maintaining shrubbery, edging, and trimming lawns; and removing snow and ice from walkways and steps.
  • Operating machinery to maintain both the internal and external grounds.
  • Assisting in lifting and moving furniture;setting up portable staging; andarranging classroom furnishings, and other materials.
  • Utilizingproper safety precautions in all work performed; and cleaningup spills and unsafe conditions in a timely manner and according to procedures.
  • Followingmanufacturer's directions for use and dilution of all chemicals and cleaning products.
  • Recognizing, avoiding, and reportingunsafe acts, conditions, accidents and injuries; and reportingsecurity issues and illegal activities.
  • Providingcustomer service as needed, respondingto requests, and assistingco-workers, students and visitors.
  • Attending seminars and training sessions as provided by management.
  • Openingand closingfacilities and settingsecurity systems; respondingto emergency situations including call backs for break-ins and mechanical problems; and assistingwith safety drills and annual cleaning duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience
High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Skill in

  • Operating and maintaining tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Following and maintaining safety standards.
  • Following verbal and written instructions.

License and Certification Requirements

A valid Minnesota State Driver's License may be required.

Medical Examination

Employment is contingent upon the results of a physical examination performed by our examining physician.

Assessment

Eligibility for position is contigent upon passing a basic English-language comprehension assessment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of

  • Materials and equipment used in building and grounds maintenance.
  • Basic techniques and procedures used in the cleaning and maintenance of public buildings.
  • Federal and state safety rules and regulations.
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Techniques for use and storage of chemicals, including OSHA Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for hazardous chemicals used in the workplace.

Experience

Previous custodianexperience.

Basic computer skills.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed indoors and outdoors at MPS facilities. Itrequires constant physical efforts, and the employeemay be exposed to safety hazards and dangerous tools and equipment. Safety precautions must be followed, including the use of safety equipment. Ajob in this category may require walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, crouching, climbing ladders, and ability to frequently lift and move items weighing up to 60 pounds.

Final candidates may be invited to interview with a committee. Final appointment to this position will be contingent upon passing a criminal background check.
