The Devereux CARES (Center for Autism Research and Education Services) School in Fitchburg, MA is a small private special education school that supports students ages 8- 22 with Autism Spectrum Disorders, developmental disabilities, dual diagnoses, and social skills deficits. Our primary goal is to teach functional and pro-social skills that can be easily generalized to the student's community and home. There is a strong emphasis on functional communication and skill acquisition using Applied Behavior Analysis and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support. At The CARES School, students learn academic, social, daily living, independent living skills, as well as community and vocational skill development.

Our classroom structure is designed to match students' needs. Through an interdisciplinary approach, an individual plan is designed for each student. Our school is prepared to meet the academic requirements of local educational agencies, as well other states where our clients are from. Our curriculum is aligned with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and coordinated through a collaborative working relationship with referring school districts. Flexibility in academic programming and creativity to meet students' needs is the strength of our organization.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) or High-school diploma with relevant human services experience required. Academic studies in the areas of psychology, sociology, social work, and education are highly desirable.
  • Previous experience preferred (not required) working with individuals under 21 with psychological, emotional and behavioral disorders, complex post-traumatic stress disorder, co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders, and/or autism spectrum disorders.
  • Driver's license is required

The IDEAL candidate will... Be empathetic, a team player, have excellent written and verbal communication skills, energetic, creative, understand the theories of behavior management and positive reinforcement, and represent yourself as a positive role model. Additionally, you must be able to complete required new hire orientation class, have a strong passion for working with and helping children and adolescents with special needs and possess a valid license.

Physical Requirements: Significant amounts of walking, sitting, and standing. Some lifting and/or managing resistance required related to applying physical intervention techniques upwards of 75-100 lbs. Some repetitive wrist/hand movements, normal hearing and vision. Occasional use of computers and office equipment. Occasional driving of Devereux vehicles for business purposes. Ability to meet 100% mastery of Safe and Positive Approaches.

Work Environment: Regularly works inside areas that are adequately lighted and ventilated. Some fluctuations in temperature. Use of Protective equipment such as latex gloves, facial mask protective eyewear, and gown. Possible exposure to blood-borne pathogens. Some degree of physical involvement in exercise of Safe and Positive Approaches.
