HEAD VARSITY FOOTBALL COACH JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Head Varsity Football Coach Reports to: Director of Athletics and Principal

Position Summary: The Head Varsity Football Coach will have considerable knowledge of the sport, rules and coaching experience. The Coach will embrace the philosophy, faith-based beliefs and code of conduct for Malden Catholic Athletics, exemplifying the highest standards of sportsmanship, our Catholic faith and conduct the program based on the Xaverian Brothers principles.

Primary Purpose: Provide instruction and coach students to develop skills and the ability to excel in the sport working with existing staff. Contribute to the Malden Catholic education program as a whole and the growth of all students involved in athletics so that they are successfully competitive within the Catholic Conference and its divisional alignment.

Qualifications: Education/Certification: Bachelor's degree in a related field and teaching certificate preferred.

Special Knowledge/Skills: Must have experience or a desire to work in a diverse school with high standards. General knowledge of coaching techniques and procedures with an experience in the shotgun wing-t system is preferred. Knowledge of and understanding of Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association rules. Demonstrated ability to instruct and supervise student athletes in the highly competitive MIAA Catholic Conference. Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills

Experience: A minimum of three years of experience as a head varsity or college football coach preferred.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

1. Use a variety of instructional techniques and media to meet the needs and improve the abilities of student athletes in the sport.

2. Manage and supervise athletic activities, contests, and practice sessions to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, discipline, respect, and good sportsmanship.

3. Work with other members of school staff to plan and put in place instructional goals and objectives to ensure the overall educational development of student athletes.

4. Ensures that the football program is a reflection of the culture of Malden Catholic and its tradition including maintaining and building a positive relationship with its alumni.

5. Establish performance criteria for competition and evaluate students' athletic abilities initially and on a regular basis.

6. Take all necessary precautions to protect student athletes, equipment, materials, and facilities.

7. Monitor and enforce MIAA and Malden Catholic student eligibility criteria for co-curricular participation and maintain MIAA coaching eligibility including, but not limited to CPR

certification, NFHS Coaching Fundamentals certification, NFHS Concussion and Heat Illness Prevention certification, and Protecting God's Children Training.

8. Work with the Director of Athletics and Assistant Athletic Director to schedule competitions and coordinate transportation arrangements.

9. Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the program and make changes based on findings and the ongoing needs of the program.

10. Instruct and advise students on NCAA regulations with regard to academic requirements for scholarships and recruiting practices.

11. Apply and enforce student discipline during athletic contests, practice sessions, and while on trips off school property in accordance with Athlete/Parent Handbook and Malden Catholic student handbook.

12. Encourage sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of athletic participation.

13. Oversee continuous development of sub-varsity teams within the program and ensure all students are given the opportunity to improve their skill.

14. Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, teachers, Assistant Athletic Director, and Director of Athletics.

15. Work with other Malden Catholic departments to assist as needed in the attainment and retainment of students that meet the standards required for attendance.

16. Maintain a current inventory of all fixed assets within the program. Oversee process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all program athletic equipment.

17. Annually establish and meet performance goals as set with the Director of Athletics.

18. Establish an organized off-season program for physical development in conjunction with the Malden Catholic Strength and Conditioning program.

19. The Principal or his/her designee may assign other duties and accountabilities limited to those consistent with the applicable job function and pay grade.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Directly supervises assigned personnel including sub-varsity coaches in collaboration with Athletic Director.
