PAIUTE LANGUAGE INSTRUCTOR

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision of the classroom teachers, assists in creating and delivering language and cultural instruction for the purpose of Paiute language and culture revitalization; and performs other duties as required. Paiute Language Instructor positions are assigned to schools where designated Paiute Language classes are offered for credit. Paiute Language Instructor positions are assigned on an 11 month school year calendar basis. Paiute Language Instructor duties and responsibilities normally require a high percentage or time in more complex interpreting situations such as presentations, which require simultaneous interpretation of complex conversations.

EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

The incumbent will be responsible for instruction for Beginner level Paiute language classes. Provide a culturally appropriate learning atmosphere that maintains a safe, physical environment for good instruction and learning. Collaborate with the Coordinating Teacher, other language instructors, and learning professionals on course design and development to ensure teaching materials and evaluation measures are appropriate to achieve program objectives. Assist with linguistic documentation and archiving projects. Ability to participate in regularly scheduled professional development and teacher training opportunities. Provide language presentations for educational and cultural outreach events. Collaborative with other Tribes' language program staff to develop and nurture relationships and partnerships.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education/Experience: Any combination equivalent to education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

1. High school diploma or equivalent;

AND

2. Two (2) years of progressively instructional experience teaching small groups or in a classroom, is desired.

AND

3. Demonstrated a strong proficiency as a speaker of the Paiute language, as well as previous success in the delivery of language and cultural sharing and teaching events.

Knowledge of:: Grammar, spelling, vocabulary and equipment; familiarity with computers. Knowledge of the principles and techniques of effective verbal and written communication in the English and "Washoe or Paiute" languages.

Skill at:: presentations, communication, and interpersonal skills; and the ability to speak effectively before groups and respond to questions. The ability to reflect on one's own teaching; respond to feedback; and adjust and improve one's own teaching as experience is gained. Ability to incorporate the traditional customs in a course of study. Strong teamwork, and willingness to work a flexibly schedule per school determined scheduling.

Licenses/Certificates:: There are no requirements for licensure or certificates.

Salary:

$30 per hour (Social Security Deduction)

Salaries are subject to adjustment and may increase and decrease each fiscal year.

Additional Job Information:

Applications are taken on an on-going basis. As positions become available, applications will be reviewed by administrators and interviews/hiring will take place. On-Call and Temporary positions do not qualify for benefits. Part-time WCSD employees may be considered for the On-Call Paiute Language Instructor position not to exceed 40 hours per week.

New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and every five years thereafter and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting. Non-licensed employees will have $58.50 deduction when their fingerprints are completed every five years. Fingerprint fees are subject to change
