JOB DESCRIPTION:
This position provides clerical support to the In-House General Counsel and Staff Attorney which includes preparing and maintaining records and correspondences, scheduling hearings, preparing exhibits for administrative hearings, assisting with monitoring settlement agreements and filing legal documents.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Collect, examine, and organize evidence and other legal documents for attorney review and case preparation.
  • Daft and proofread correspondence and legal documents, such as pleadings and contracts.
  • Research regulations, laws, and legal articles to assist with the preparation of reports, case, files and legal advice.
  • Mail, fax, or arrange for delivery of legal correspondence to clients, witnesses, and court officials.
  • Organize and maintain law libraries, documents, and case files.
  • Additional duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools and Board of Education.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Associate's Degree in paralegal studies, a paralegal certificate or a Bachelor's degree preferred
  • At least three years of experience as a Legal Assistant, Clerk, Paralegal, Legal Secretary or other comparable experience (preferably in a law firm or in a corporate legal department). that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified required.
  • Specific knowledge and experience related to education law preferred.
  • Must have excellent organization and communication skills.
  • Ability to use independent judgment to manage and impart confidential information.
  • Must be available to work beyond normal work hours as determined by the In-House Counsel.
  • Advanced working knowledge of legal research principals, methods, techniques, and resources
  • Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the democratic political process.
  • Knowledge of Student First, Contract Law and Alabama Code.
  • Familiar with legal research software; LexisNexis, Thomas West WestlawPRO
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, and draw inferences from research findings, and prepare reports.
  • Knowledge of litigation and legal contract, agreement, and settlement procedures and documentation.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
NOTE: Employment experience gained in the private sector may be considered when determining salary placement.
