Extended Term Substitute, Lower Elementary Montessori Teacher

Position : Extended Term Substitute, Lower Elementary Montessori Teacher
Available February 2022 through no later than June 30, 2022
Tobin Montessori School

The Tobin Montessori School Community:
The Tobin Montessori school is a tight knit community of learners, devoted to integrating the best practices of Montessori philosophy and public education. In 2015, Tobin achieved accreditation by the American Montessori Society (AMS), making us the first AMS-accredited public school in the United States! Our teachers hold Massachusetts licenses as well as Montessori Certification.

The Montessori method is based upon Dr. Maria Montessori's observation of children's ability to absorb knowledge from their surroundings, and their tireless interest in manipulating materials. Her belief was that children possess the intrinsic motivation and ability to teach themselves.

Students at Tobin are engaged in a rich Montessori curriculum that is fully aligned to the Common Core standards. Our highly collaborative school provides an environment where diversity is respected and celebrated. Children not only learn how to be independent learners, but they also gain the skills necessary for working collaboratively inside our classrooms and beyond the walls of our school.

The Opportunity :
The Tobin Montessori Lower Elementary Program consists of a multi-graded, heterogeneous group of students aged 6-9 years old. The aim of Montessori education is to foster competent, responsible, adaptive individuals who are lifelong learners and problem solvers. Montessori classrooms are supplied with a diverse set of materials and teaching equipment designed to foster physical, creative, and social, independence. The classroom environment encourages social interaction for cooperative learning, peer teaching and emotional development. Learning occurs in an inquiring, collaborative, nurturing atmosphere where students increase their own knowledge through self-initiated experiences under the guidance of trained adults.

The Lower Elementary Teacher will report to the Principal and is responsible for planning and implementation of curriculum based on the Massachusetts Common Core State standards and the American Montessori Society approved curriculum. The teacher will provide a high quality educational program with emphasis on math, literacy, science and social studies. The teacher will work closely and collaboratively with the Lower Elementary Team, the Montessori Resource Teacher, the Classroom Paraprofessional, Special Educators and other support personnel.

Your Skill Set :
As the incoming Substitute Montessori Lower Elementary Teacher, you will possess many, though perhaps not all, of the following characteristics and qualifications:
  • Be able to work with and be sensitive to the needs of a socio-economically, ethnically, and linguistically diverse population of students
  • Be educated in the Montessori Philosophy and methodology appropriate to the age level taught, and have the ability and dedication to put key concepts in to practice
  • Apply observational skills to match students' developmental needs with materials and activities.
  • Apply teaching strategies that support and facilitate the unique growth of each individual student.
  • Be skilled in guiding students in creating individual plans
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher from an accredited college or university required
  • Previous Montessori training at the Lower Elementary Level strongly preferred
