ABOUT MADISON SCHOOL & COMMUNITY RECREATION

Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) serves a community of 230,000 in Madison, WI, with 75 full time and 2200+ seasonal staff members. MSCR offers a full range of recreation programs and services utilizing school facilities, parks, and other community facilities. Programs include fitness, aquatics, adult and youth sports, after school child care, summer camps, outdoor adventure, middle school youth resource centers, arts, and sports camps. MSCR is a department of the Madison Metropolitan School District, providing public recreation and after school programming for the Madison community since 1926.

Purpose of Position:

The purpose of this position is to develop, promote and supervise MSCR community recreation programs in the area of fitness and wellness activities for all ages. The program provides fitness, health and nutrition education delivered through classes and other activities to help youth and adults develop and maintain healthy lifestyles.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Directly supervise one full time staff as well as a number of part-time, seasonal employees and volunteers that work in MSCR programs throughout the year.

General Responsibilities:

  • Responsibilities include planning, implementing and supervision of year-round programs. The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties will be required and assigned.
  • Research, plan, design and implement a full range of fitness and wellness programs including, but not limited to, aerobics, yoga, dance, strength training, cardio, conditioning, nutrition and mindfulness, for youth and adults.
  • Instruct group fitness classes as needed.
  • Locate, negotiate and maintain facility agreements for non-district program sites throughout the community.
  • Obtain building permits for internal facilities.
  • Recruit, hire, train, assign, supervise and evaluate program staff, instructors and volunteers.
  • Conduct program visits to observe staff techniques and evaluate staff and program effectiveness.
  • Assist with the development of annual program budget and monitor expenditures and revenue.
  • Research, purchase, organize, distribute and maintain inventory of program supplies and equipment.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with program personnel, other MSCR staff, the public and other community organizations involved in youth and adult health and fitness.
  • Design and create promotional materials for programs and events, and work with Marketing Specialist to promote programs
  • Track participation statistics, maintain necessary records, develop and submit required reports.
  • Monitor and approve employee payroll.
  • Share program specific presentations with MSCR, MMSD and other community organizations.
  • Oversee program registration, address inquiries about classes, fees, scholarships, refunds and policies.
  • Maintain knowledge of current fitness trends and guidelines through conferences and workshops.
  • Assess and respond to community needs and interests, review demographic trends and develop an annual program plan, including budget, class schedules and promotional materials.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.




Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in recreation administration, kinesiology, exercise science, health education, sports or related field, and a minimum of three years' experience coordinating, implementing and supervising recreation classes/programs, supervising staff and volunteers, leading fitness programming; or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Organizational skills and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks, work under tight deadlines, and use effective time management.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse clientele and staff, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to problem solve.
  • Experience working cross-culturally and/or commitment to work towards improving one's own cultural competence, i.e., valuing difference/diversity, recognizing personal limitations in one's skills and expertise and having the desire to learn in these areas.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite and, Microsoft Office.
  • Certification in CPR or willingness to obtain within 6 months of employment.
  • Leadership experience and knowledge of fitness and health programming.
License Requirements:

  • Current certification from American Council on Exercise, American College of Sports Medicine, or National Strength & Conditioning Association , or National group exercise certification.
Working Conditions:

  • Flexible work schedule may include working Monday through Friday, with flexible work hours between the hours of 8:00am and 5:30pm, some evenings and weekends as assigned by supervisor or dictated by program needs.
Physical Requirements:

  • Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling objects and materials of moderate weight, twenty to fifty pounds.
  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment (personal computer, phone, fax, copier).
  • Tasks are regularly performed in safe and comfortable surroundings without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
