Position Definition: The Educational Audiologist is responsible for all aspects of audiological testing, evaluation, and consultations. Assesses and monitors students' hearing status and consults with parents, teachers, and local district education staff.

Relationship: The Educational Audiologist shall be directly responsible to the Supervisor of Special Education.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience :
  • Master's Degree in Audiology, required.
  • PA Licensed Audiologist, required.
  • PDE certification, Speech Pathologist or Hearing Impaired required.
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology, preferred.
  • Minimum two years experience as an Audiologist, preferred.

  • Demonstrates accurate understanding of audiometric procedures, anatomy of the ear, causes of hearing loss, hearing aids, and current fitting strategies.
  • Demonstrates accurate understanding of evaluation techniques to verify the proper fit of the hearing aid.

  • Demonstrates accurate understanding of technology to measure noise levels, acoustics, and factors that impact reverberation or sound transmission.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of normal child development, auditory skill development, language development, use of hearing aids by infants, and cochlear implants, in the application of student assessment.

Authority: The Educational Audiologist will have the authority to perform all functions listed below in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Functions/Duties/Responsibilities: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function/duty/responsibility at acceptable standards. In accordance with both state and/or federal law, reasonable accommodations will be considered upon employee request.

Essential :
  • Leads and mentors peers within the Deaf/Hard of Hearing Program.
  • Effectively works with assistive listening devices and instructs staff on daily monitoring of equipment.
  • Effectively utilizes audiology technology.
  • Communicates and counsels families of Deaf/Hard of Hearing students.
  • Communicates with, instructs, and works with students, staff, and parents.
  • Consults with classroom teacher regarding adaption in the classroom to decrease noise level.

Skills/Knowledge : (continued)
  • Prepares, conducts, and evaluates hearing screening and provides diagnostic evaluation and assessment in accordance with established professional standards.
  • Monitors and verifies function and fit of amplification equipment used by students.
  • Provides consultation and training to CLIU and district staff.
  • Facilitates recommendations for Deaf/Hard of Hearing students with school personnel and parents, appropriately.
  • Completes administrative records, student contact records, and records of amplification evaluation, in accordance with departmental guidelines.
  • Maintains and manages calibration of audiology equipment.
  • Conducts formal hearing evaluations for students entering the Deaf/Hard of Hearing Program to determine eligibility, as well as to determine the impact of the hearing loss on the student's ability to hear and understand speech in school environment.
  • Conducts classroom observations to determine if a Deaf or Hard of Hearing student is using his/her hearing to gain information effectively.
  • Examines the physical environment of the classroom to make recommendations related to listening conditions, such as seating arrangements, noise management, and teaching strategies.
  • Conducts assessments in order to determine whether a student would benefit from an assistive listening device and determines which type of assistive listening device would be most beneficial to meet the student's needs.
  • Manages assistive listening devices.
  • Monitors the effectiveness of the assistive learning devices in the school environment throughout the school year. Troubleshoots and fixes problems with the devices.
  • Conducts regular middle-ear monitoring for students with chronic middle-ear problems and consults with parents and nurses to facilitate medical management, when needed.
  • Consults with teachers to ensure that the student has access to information in the classroom while hearing is temporarily decreased due to middle ear problems.
  • Consults with parents, teachers, and the education staff regarding the student's auditory profile.
  • Conducts evaluations for students referred for having auditory processing disorders.
  • Participates in Child Study, IEP, and educational evaluation meetings.
  • Writes reports regarding test results.
  • Develops a program that compliments the Deaf/Hard of Hearing program.

Secondary :
  • Complete and submit periodic reports as requested by the administrative staff.
  • Participate in professional growth activities and provide information/expertise to increase public awareness of hearing loss.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, as assigned by Supervisor of Special Education and/or CLIU Administration.
