Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) serves a community of 230,000 in Madison, WI, with 75 full time and 2200+ seasonal staff members. MSCR offers a full range of recreation programs and services utilizing school facilities, parks, and other community facilities. Programs include fitness, aquatics, adult and youth sports, after school child care, summer camps, outdoor adventure, middle school youth resource centers, arts, and sports camps. Purpose of Position:

The purpose of this position is to manage and supervise MSCR Afterschool and Enrichment programming during the school year and serve as summer program director during the summer.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The following duties are normal for this position. They are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be assigned.

Specific Duties:

  • Design, implement and supervise MSCR afterschool care and enrichment programs, and evening student and family enrichment programs. Serve as on-site supervisor for school-year programs at home school.
  • Serve as on site supervisor for programs at home school.
  • Establish physically and emotionally safe program environments. Ensure compliance with State and District quality standards.
  • Serve as a liaison between MSCR, school personnel, community members, parents and community agencies.
  • Interview, hire, train, supervise and evaluate staff and volunteers.
  • Develop work schedules for staff, collect timesheets, submit and approve payroll.
  • Work with school principal, community members, parents and students to assess needs, resolve problems and concerns.
  • Order and distribute program supplies and equipment.
  • Manage program level budgets.
  • Develop, distribute, collect and process participant registration forms and payments.
  • Keep and submit participation and attendance records; submit grant data and monthly summary reports.
  • Work with community agencies in collaborative partnerships to maximize resources and bring community resources into programs.
  • Attend MSCR staff meetings and professional development opportunities.


  • High school diploma and at least two years of post high school education in recreation, education or related field.
  • At least one year of experience in developing, managing, leading and evaluating recreational or academic after school or summer programs, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Strong organizational skills, detail oriented.
  • Experience working with racially and culturally diverse participants, staff, parents, school staff and with the community.
  • Effective problem solving and conflict resolution skills, and the ability to handle emergency and/or crisis situations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Google applications, Microsoft Word, Excel and Access.
  • Bilingual in Hmong or Spanish, preferred
  • First Aid and/or CPR certification, preferred
  • 24 related college credits (e.g. child development, program development, social work) with 6 credits in supervision, personnel and financial management, preferred.
Physical and Sensory Requirements:

  • Ability to lift, push and pull up to 50 pounds. Ability to stoop, climb, balance and crouch.
  • Ability to sustain prolonged visual concentration.
  • Ability to determine characteristics, similarities and differences between colors and sounds of job-related objects, tasks and materials.
  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment such as computer, telephone, fax machine, photocopier.
