PRIMARY PURPOSE:
This position will serve as a teacher who provides grade-level content-area instruction to emergent bilingual students in Spanish. This teacher will teach grade-level Spanish Language Arts and/or other core classes such as but not limited to science, math, and/or social studies. Under the direction of the principal, this position plans, organizes, and presents instruction in Spanish that helps students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development in becoming fully bilingual, biliterate, and multicultural. Major duties of the teacher include but are not limited to: management of instructional time; management of student behavior; instructional presentation; instructional monitoring of student performance; instructional feedback; facilitating instruction; creating and maintaining an appropriate multilingual, multiliterate, and multicultural classroom and school environment; interacting within the educational environment; and performing non-instructional duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES (E) AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assists the principal in achieving school and district objectives and carrying out policies established by the Board of Directors to Successfully Prepare All Students for Their Futures. (E)

Directs and evaluates the learning experiences of the students in grade-level Spanish; both curricular and co-curricular activities. (E)

Provide instruction using the KSD curriculum framework for grade-level Spanish Language Arts and/or other content areas. (E)

Uses Washington Learning Standards, specifically side-by-side Spanish and English Common Core State Standards, when planning and delivering instruction. (E)

Provides guidance to students that will promote their educational development in biliteracy. (E)

Provides guidance to students that promotes global citizenship and multiculturalism. (E)

Develops progress monitoring systems to track progress on individual student goals and objectives. (E)

Adjusts instruction when there are significant differences between actual and predicted performance in the target languages. (E)

Provides and models direct instruction utilizing best practices. (E)

Works in conjunction with instructional colleagues to analyze and interpret student achievement data for the purpose of determining individual instructional needs. (E)

Collaborates with instructional colleagues to analyze student work relative to content standards to improve classroom instruction and student achievement. (E)

Supports instructional colleagues in the use of standards-based core and supplemental materials. (E)

Collaborates with district office and building administrators to implement comprehensive and powerful instructional programs which ensure that students meet state standards. (E)

Participates in site meetings, and collaborates with general education teachers, special education teachers, Educational Staff Associate staff, and classified staff in monitoring education programs. (E)

Participates in effective instructional support trainings, curriculum development and technical assistance compliance trainings. (E)

Collaborates with teachers/building staff to ensure a consistent and coordinated academic program/intervention plan for struggling learners. (E)

Collaborates with Inclusive Education Services and Instructional Services to ensure a comprehensive and coherent continuum of services for students, utilizing instructional fidelity. (E)

Maintains professional competency by attending district and other staff development conferences and workshops. (E)

Communicates regularly with parents in both Spanish and English in a positive and constructive manner.
Maintains order in the classroom and in the building. (E)

Maintains adequate and careful records as required by the principal and district. (E)

Provides for the care of school property and appropriate use of supplies, equipment, and utilities. (E)

Serves on committees and works on special projects. Assumes responsibility for co-curricular and other duties beyond regular classroom activities as determined by the principal and agreed upon by the teacher. (E)

Performs all other duties as assigned.

OTHER JOB DUTIES:
Uses sheltered instruction strategies to make content accessible to language learners at all levels of language proficiency.

Scaffolds and differentiates instruction to meet the needs of language learners at all levels of language proficiency.

Disaggregates ELPA21/WIDA results and applies additional formative assessment to accurately determine and implement appropriate language development strategies for increasing all language learners' proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing within core instruction.

Effectively plans and delivers CCSS/NGSS/ELPS/WIDA-aligned instruction utilizing district-adopted, grade-level appropriate curricular materials.

Effectively plans and delivers ELPS/WIDA-aligned formative language development assessments and track student language development progress.

Effectively and successfully plans with and co-teaches with a variety of other teachers at various grade levels and across content areas.

Carries out all federal and state requirements regarding the education of language learners.

Completes, in a timely fashion, all records and reports as required by law and regulation or requested by the administration.

Works cooperatively with others.

Attends meetings as directed and in compliance with the KEA Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Continues to grow professionally through collaboration with colleagues and professional development opportunities.

Maintains a safe working condition and safely operates electronic and other equipment needed to carry out job functions and responsibilities.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bilingual and biliterate in both Spanish and English.
  • High degree of academic literacy and fluency in Spanish; ability to teach grade-level content completely in Spanish
  • Middle School: K-8 certificate or content area endorsement; ELA preferred for Spanish Language Arts; preferred content areas beyond language arts: science, social studies, and math
  • High School: ELA required for Spanish Language Arts; content area endorsement for science, social studies, and math (preferred) or other content areas.
  • Appropriate Washington State certification is required and must be on file prior to beginning work
  • Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Washington State endorsement in ELL and/or Bilingual Education
  • Thorough and demonstrated understanding and implementation of principles, practices, trends, goals, and objectives of public education and bilingual education.
  • Master's degree in related field.
  • Research, best practices and technical aspects of field of specialty.
  • Proven successful experience working in bilingual education with emergent bilingual students.
  • Proven successful experience teaching in urban public education.
  • Proven successful experience in an ethnically diverse public school district.
  • Experience with culturally responsive teaching techniques
  • Experience analyzing data to identify appropriate instructional practices to ensure student learning and grade-level achievement
  • Ability to effectively model, co-teach, co-plan, and collaborate with other teachers
  • Proven successful experience in working and learning in a Professional Learning Community.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use computer software, and technology resources related to word and data processing, telecommunication, internet-based district applications
  • Ability to be flexible, develop favorable relationships, and work collaboratively with co-workers, administrators, parents, students and the community.
  • Strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to manage ideas, time and materials to accomplish goals and monitor multiple projects at a time.
  • Gain cooperation through discussion and persuasion; promote consensus in groups of individuals with diverse interests and values.
  • Facilitate and promote collaborative decision-making; facilitate conflict resolution.
  • Analyze complex situations and synthesize diverse information carefully and adopt an effective course of action.

Evaluation responsibilities are assigned to the building administrator.
