The Opportunity
This role is an exciting opportunity to prepare and serve on a diverse and dynamic team committed to transforming public education in Providence Public Schools. Working alongside a team of dedicated, equity-driven teams of professionals, the goal is to deliver on societies' most fundamental obligation: providing all children with access to a fair, equitable, and rigorous education. The time for change is now and the district is in the process of a game-changing transformation led by a newly appointed State Turnaround Superintendent, in coordination with the Rhode Island Department of Education and with the support of the larger Providence community. The Director of Social Emotional Learning & Mental Health will be responsible for the implementation and oversight of all in-district SEL, Mental Health initiatives, programs while overseeing district clinical staff (psychologists/social workers).

The Role
The Director of Social Emotional Learning & Mental Health is a member of the district's Student Services Wellness Department. Informed by current research and best practices in the SEL and Mental Health field and through active partnership with school based/district leaders, educators, clinical staff including school-based personnel(Office of Student Services, Social Workers, Psychologists), the director will perform a variety of administrative responsibilities in coordinating the successful development, implementation and evaluation of a comprehensive and integrated approach to social emotional learning, mental health, and academics throughout the school district. The Director of Social Emotional Learning & Mental Health will lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive systematic Tier 1 SEL approach and professional learning plan, holding an essential role in implementing social emotional and academic strategies across schools to create safe, healthy, cultural and linguistic environments that support student's social, emotional and academic development in alignment with the District Wellness Policy.

Roles & Responsibilities
Manage and support the development of a shared district strategy and aligned goals for SEL
  • Assemble and co-facilitate a SEL steering committee and task force in collaboration with the Office of Opportunity GapsAdvance a shared SEL vision and principles aligned with the district mission and core valuesManage the development of SEL goals aligned to the vision, that include outcomes for equitable learning environments and student social, emotional and academic progressCollaborate with the Office of Data and Accountability and other district departments to select, implement and interpret SEL student assessments to inform instruction, continuous improvement and program evaluationCollaborate with other district departments on the development and implementation of a Multi-tiered System of Supports.
Lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive K-12 Tier 1 Social Emotional Learning plan for the district
  • Assess current delivery of K-12 school Social Emotional Learning practices, curriculum and resources in PPSD by working with the Specialized Instruction DepartmentLead the development of a comprehensive K-12 Social Emotional Learning Framework that is aligned with district, state and national standards, practices and initiatives and vetted by all key district stakeholdersDevelop and communicate a plan for Tier 1 SEL program implementation that includes the integration of SEL into academics, Adult SEL, and school & classroom practices. Ensure that this plan is aligned with and in support of equity and TAP Plan.Identify model programs/curricula/practicesCoordinate the adoption of high quality instructional materials districtwideDevelop and manage resources that support and enhance SEL/Mental Health instructionLead implementation of school systems, environment and instructional practice strategies that promote positive SEL and developmentDevelop parent and family engagement strategies and communications about SELEngage in continuous learning and commit to professional growth in areas which support or improve the development of SEL/Mental Health
Lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive K-12 SEL professional learning plan
  • Create and communicate a plan of continued professional learning for central office clinic leads, administrators, and teachers/staff that teach and support the delivery of SELLead the development, implementation and evaluation of year-round central and school-based professional development, including professional learning communities, school-based coaching and technical assistanceSupport district and instructional leaders in their professional development effortsProvide ongoing professional development and direct supports to teachers and school staffSupport school leaders and teams in developing goals and implementation plans for SEL that create safe, welcoming, inclusive and culturally and linguistically sustaining school environmentsDevelop a comprehensive, user friendly system for collecting and sharing quality resources with schools
Communicate and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders
  • Communicate and collaborate with district departments to develop a coordinated district and school support strategy for SELCollaborate with city agencies, community-based organizations and schools to identify and map available resources and coordinated program integrationEffectively communicate with district leadership, school leaders, teachers/staff and external partners and stakeholdersParticipate in the District Wellness Committee, regularly attend meetings and contribute to discussions; serve on other committees as assigned.Utilize data to generate reports and communicate results with individual schools, district, and funded or community partnersIdentify and help to secure future funding opportunities to support the ongoing mission and strategic goals of the Wellness Department
Oversee Program Administration, Evaluation and Assessment
  • Collaborate with and provide appropriate supervision, evaluation, mentoring, and professional growth and development opportunities to the Psychologists, Social Workers, Lead Psychologists/Social Workers, SEL/Mental Health Grant Coordinator, and other SEL related assigned staffCollaborate with other departments on the development of a district Multi-Tiered System of Supports framework and universal procedure/protocolsProvide leadership and direction toward educator capacity building that supports increased student achievement consistent with the district's vision of rigorous culturally responsive teaching & learningCreate/oversee district policies and practices related to SEL/Mental Health through an equity lensPartner with school based/district leaders, educators, clinical staff, and fellow Student Support Service colleagues to align SEL/Mental Health goals to district priorities and ensure a cohesive approach to addressing student's SEL/Mental Health and developmental needs.

Salary Rate Range
$111,000 - $118,000

Qualifications
