Position Overview

The Lead Data Engineer is a member of the Data Science & Digital Solutions team and is responsible for collecting, storing, processing, and analyzing of large sets of data and developing stored procedures, views, and systems to provide access and integration for the enterprise SQL database environment. The primary focus will be on building and implementing solutions to use for these purposes, and then maintaining, monitoring and fully integrating them with the architecture used across the district.

Roles and Responsibilities

The following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work being performed in relation to the position. This is not a comprehensive listing of all responsibilities or tasks; other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate:
  • Translates business requirements into technical requirements
  • Designs and develops code, scripts, reports, and data management processes that supports internal systems and integrations with external vendors
  • Implements ETL (extract, transform, load) processes.
  • Monitors performance and advises on any necessary infrastructure changes.
  • Implements data retention policies.
  • Work with multiple large clustered and non-clustered environments.
  • Identifies, troubleshoots and resolves issues.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert for data-related projects and initiatives.
  • Ensures appropriate security measures are applied to meet requirements.
  • Creates and maintains technical documentation that is required in supporting solutions
  • Mentors and provides technical and project leadership to a dynamic and collaborative team, demonstrating excellent interpersonal skills and management capabilities.


Qualifications

Below are the qualifications for this position:
  • Bachelors' Degree in Information Technology field
  • Microsoft Certified SQL Server DBA or Developer or AWS certification preferred
  • Working knowledge of cloud environments and handling databases in cloud environments preferred
  • Experience with integrating of data from multiple data sources
  • Strong understanding of database structures, theories, principles, and practices
  • Strong concepts/experience of designing and developing ETL architectures
  • Knowledge of data modeling and mapping preferred
  • Experience in building, maintaining and performance tuning databases, tables, views, stored procedures, indexes, functions and triggers
  • Experience with data management and data processing flowcharting techniques
  • Knowledge of reporting and query tools and best practices
  • Self-motivated and directed, with keen attention to detail and able to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment
  • Ability to solve problems using a creative and logical mind set
  • Demonstrated skills in team leadership, coaching, and competency building preferred
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to solve problems using a creative and logical mind set
  • Experience in projects using Agile delivery is preferred

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly talking, expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. The employee must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly. The employee must possess normal cognitive abilities including the ability to learn, recall and apply certain practices and policies. Frequently sitting and/or remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

Telework Disclosure

Employees who perform the responsibilities of the above position have been identified as having the potential to telework. Telework is defined as completing one's duties and responsibilities at a site other than one's assigned duty location. In order to be eligible for telework privileges, an employee must have demonstrated consistent, positive performance and have the support and approval of their direct supervisor. In addition, these employees must have reliable high-speed internet and a designated workspace that allows them privacy while completing sensitive and confidential work. Employees who are non-exempt and are teleworking will work their required scheduled hours and gain approval from their supervisor if they work more than 8 hours a day or more than 40 hours in a workweek. Teleworking privileges can be amended, changed, or revoked based upon the performance of the employee, as well as the needs of Loudoun County Public Schools.
