Our schools will be operating in-person for all staff and students for the current school year. Our schools are co-located in DOE buildings and will be following NYC protocols, which include mandated vaccinations. Our protocols will be updated as necessary based on changes in NYC protocols or additional CDC directives.

New Visions for Public Schools is looking for exceptional Student Advisors to support our students at the New Visions AIM I Charter High Schools. Student Advisors will provide services to an assigned caseload of students to support with attendance, behavior, socio-emotional learning, and academics. They will provide students with 1:1 and group coaching and advocacy to support and motivate them towards academic progress, positive peer-to-peer interactions, attendance goals, and scholarly behavior.

About New Visions AIM Charter High Schools

New Visions AIM Charter High Schools are small, close-knit, family-oriented communities where dedicated staff members work to ensure that over-age, under-credited students graduate from high school, thoroughly prepared to excel academically, professionally, and personally. Whether students have previously struggled in school or are at risk of dropping out, the schools provide the supports, experiences and opportunities to help them excel academically and graduate high school.

About the Position

The Student Advisor (SA) will provide services to an assigned caseload of students to support with attendance, behavior, socio-emotional learning, and academics. SA's will provide students with 1:1 and group coaching and advocacy to support and motivate them towards academic progress, positive peer-to-peer interactions, attendance goals, and scholarly behavior. SA's will analyze attendance data, develop prevention/intervention plans to address chronic absenteeism, make appropriate outreach to families/caregivers, monitor student progress, and make community referrals when necessary. SA's will work with teachers, school staff and students to improve academic performance and support students to make greater academic gains. Within this role, Student Advisors provide support throughout the academic day within the natural school milieu including hallways, transitions, and the classroom. SA's report to the Lead Counselor on the Comprehensive Counseling Team.

Responsibilities:
  • Coaching/Advising
    • Support and develop a transformational relationship with a caseload of assigned students and families. Identify academic and social emotional goals by assessing students' readiness to engage in school and support that process of change.
    • Provide 1:1 and group coaching and advocacy to support and motivate students towards academic progress, peer-to-peer interactions, attendance, and scholarly behavior. Document all counseling sessions and outreach efforts using school's systems.
    • Track status of goals and support students in achieving those goals; report out on completion, challenges and successes.
    • Work with students to build competencies around lagging skills and use restorative interventions to support students with building relationships and working through conflict
    • Maintain on-going communication with parents and caregivers
  • Attendance
    • Monitor student attendance, attendance outreach, and home visits.
    • Coordinate attendance initiatives and outreach, including daily phone calls to students/guardians for wake-up, tardiness, and absenteeism, as required.
    • Assess students with chronic absences, makes community outreach visits to assess the family environment and develop a plan for re-engagement. Facilitate student-centered efforts to promote increases in attendance.
  • Advisory: Lead advisory classes to develop character and social emotional skills
  • Academic Support: Support individual student academic growth. Provide interventions to students to support the teaching process to maximize learning, both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Referrals
    • Provide assistance (or seek support wherever necessary) for students facing physical, emotional, social, medical, familial or chemical dependency challenges
    • Make referrals to needed community services in an ongoing effort to support the student and family stability.
    • Serve as a liaison between the schools and such agencies as social services, court services, and the police department regarding student truancy.
  • School-wide Initiatives
    • Develop staff strategies for dealing with potential behavior issues. Participate in weekly supervision sessions and monthly team meetings to review efforts and set goals.
    • Collaborate with student support staff and instructional staff to develop interventions for students who have chronic attendance issues and behavioral issues. Develop individualized service plans to improve attendance.
    • Engage in regular classroom observations to support teachers and track students' socio-emotional development.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelors Degree preferred; Associates or equivalent required
  • 2+ years of successful experience supporting students in a high-school setting
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply positive youth development principles
  • Bilingual Spanish preferred
