Job Description

Position Overview
KIPP Philadelphia Public Schools (KPPS) seeks a strong writer and relationship builder to join a growing Development team as we launch a multi-year comprehensive growth campaign to support the implementation of our five-year strategic plan - an exciting moment in KPPS history! The Donor Communications Manager (DCM) will be responsible for helping to shape and deliver KPPS' emerging narrative, setting our work and impact in the context of the broader education landscape, capturing donors' interest, and highlighting opportunities for impact. The DCM's demonstrated passion and commitment, combined with their creative approach to written communication, will inspire longstanding donors and new prospects alike. This is a unique opportunity for a passionate storyteller to shape the narrative of KPPS' work and opportunity for donor impact aligned with KPPS' five-year plan strategic plan. This role will also serve as a liaison between KPPS executive leadership, other Regional Office teams, and school-based program staff, with the central goal of creating a cohesive and inspiring funding narrative. The Donor Communications Manager reports to the Managing Director of Development and Engagement (MDDE).
Key Responsibilities
Donor Communications
  • Write technically excellent, artistically compelling, and succinct donor-facing written communication materials to support KPPS' fundraising efforts, including case statements, fact sheets, concept notes, pitch decks, and other donor-facing materials.
  • Creatively use qualitative and quantitative data to execute strategic donor communication plans and initiatives that tell the KIPP Philadelphia Public Schools story and increase engagement from our donors through giving, advocating, and volunteering.
  • Proactively look for creative ways to articulate KIPP Philadelphia's value proposition to the philanthropic community.
  • Learn and write in the CEO's and COO's voices, and tailor language and content for the appropriate audience (donor, prospect, or other audiences).
  • Collaborate with Development team colleagues to create a communications strategy and materials to achieve annual fundraising goals.
  • Partner with the Grants and Development Manager (GDM) to create targeted outreach to build donor engagement, from first contact through stewardship, across channels - email, web, events, and other mechanisms.
  • Develop and publish the KIPP Philadelphia Public Schools annual report.
Administrative Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain a deep understanding of the KPPS vision, commitment to equity, and organizational goals, and use this understanding to identify and recommend mission-aligned, priorities-aligned grant opportunities.
  • Deeply internalize and uphold the KIPP-branded voice.
  • Work with MDDE to set priorities, monitor progress, and manage and adjust the work plan and calendar as needed.
  • Project manage end-of-year appeals and annual campaign, helping to ensure deadlines and fundraising goals are met.
  • Provide support in executing cultivation events for major donors and prospects.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Development team and the External Impact team.
  • Work with external vendors to produce materials and execute communications plans.


Qualifications

This role will require excellent writing and storytelling skills, as well as impeccable organizational skills and a knack for building strong relationships. A strong candidate will be curious, always looking to connect the dots, and possess highly developed interpersonal skills. Exceptional and creative written communications skills, demonstrating an ability to flex style (for voice, audience, medium), while maintaining brand is key to success in this role.

  • Strategic Thinking: Demonstrates ability to thoughtfully and effectively research and analyze; is able to elevate insights to inform strategy and translate strategy into priorities and activities
  • Growth Mindset: Strong candidates are willing and eager to learn from others and apply feedback and take an active role in their own professional development, ensuring critical skills and competencies are continuously sharpened

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in communications, fundraising and/or grant writing.
  • Fluency with design software and Mailchimp highly preferred
  • Mastery of Microsoft Office (particularly Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint) required
  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • Complete all required criminal and child abuse background checks:

  • Cogent Federal Fingerprinting

Compensation
  • Salary range: $60,000-$70,000
