Who We Are

Founded in 2010, Challenge Preparatory Charter School ("Challenge Prep") provides students and families with a successful K-10 academic program in Far Rockaway, Queens. Scholars receive a strong academic foundation in grades K-10 in a blended learning environment through

rigorous and supportive learning experiences. Opened in August 2021, Challenge Charter High School ("CCHS") offers a unique early college and career and technical education ("CCTE") program to ensure that students graduate prepared to be successful in the college and/or career

pathway of their choice. CCHS provides an academically rigorous program that integrates content with real-world technical skills found in the following fields: Aviation, Culinary Arts, Health Sciences, and Hospitality. Through strategic collaborations with industry partners, students have access to personalized academic and social-emotional learning sequences, authentic field experiences, career counseling, and college coursework.

Understanding the Role

The High School Math teachers will report to the principal or his/her designee. In addition to teaching in the content area, their goal is to help pupils develop critical-thinking abilities by gaining an understanding of mathematical concepts. The teacher may be required to teach an advisory class, an elective, or coach a sports program to support the growth of the whole child. The Math Teacher is expected to provide students with learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop or modify curricula and prepare lessons and other instructional materials. The Math teachers may need to help students prepare for graduation and college entrance exams.

The staff of Challenge Charter High School is committed to teaching students the values of scholarship, respect, honesty, courage, and balance in a collaborative technology-infused, inclusive family-like environment. Teachers assist all scholars in their content area courses, as well as their advisories and electives, so they may reach their full potential by focusing on their individual aspirations and strengths. Planning for students of all ability levels, including English Language Learners and students with disabilities is expected so that these students may achieve academic mastery. Students learn to make real-world connections by the infusion of internships, volunteer work, and advanced level learning.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will share Challenge Prep's vision for our educational culture and program. Specifically, s/he will:

  • Deliver instruction in the curricular area that is aligned with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).

  • The High School Math Teacher will develop and teach engaging lessons that follow the rigorous, Common Core curriculum.

  • Bestowing students with arithmetic and problem-solving skills.

  • Utilize formal and informal assessment data to drive instruction and ensure student mastery of standards.

  • Build a warm and inclusive classroom environment, implement the philosophy of restorative practices.

  • Create and maintain strong relationships with students and families

  • Actively participate in grade-level meetings, collaborative planning, and professional development.

  • Accept ultimate responsibility for the academic progress of his or her students, and work to actively overcome setbacks

  • The ability to create a classroom environment where students feel safe supported and challenged.

  • Passion and commitment to teaching scholars in underserved areas and to closing the achievement gap.

  • Relentless drive to set and achieve ambitious goals.

  • Strong collaboration and teamwork skills.

  • Growth mindset and ability to use feedback to improve practice Experience teaching in underserved areas a plus.

  • Help students prepare for standardized testing.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree and certification appropriate content area preferred

  • Dually licensed preferred; content area and ESL or Special Education

  • Highly motivated to teach students from underserved areas and devoted to closing the achievement gap

  • Teaching experience in an urban school setting preferred

  • The ability to create a classroom setting where students of every academic level experience enjoyment, engagement, and enthusiasm in their learning

  • Strong teamwork ethic

  • Ability to use data to drive instruction

Work Year

This is a full-time position that begins in mid-August and goes through the end of June. All staff is expected to attend Confratute, a weeklong summer planning institute in mid-July at the University of Connecticut, which will offer an essential opportunity for staff to be involved in developing the school's culture and instructional program.
