Supervised by and/or Reports to: Supervisor of Nursing

General Responsibilities: Protect and promote the health, facilitate the normal development, and advance the academic success of all students. Essential Duties:

  • Practices as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Code of Virginia, Manassas City Public Schools School Board Policies and Regulations, and the scope and standards of school nursing practice.
  • Participates in developing, implementing, and evaluating the Health Services program goals, objectives, and procedures in collaboration with school personnel and community resources.
  • Participates in planning interventions or accommodations for students that address health-related barriers to accessing the learning environment.
  • Participates in identifying and reporting environmental health and safety hazards (current and potential) for students and staff.
  • Maintains accurate records and reviews statistical information regarding the health status and trends of individual students, utilization of Health Services, and the school community.
  • Communicates students' health needs or concerns to parents and staff as appropriate.
  • Participates on the Child Study team, assists in the identification of students to their parents and appropriate school staff.
  • Maintains health office supplies and equipment in good working order as well as a system for meeting health care needs, whether ongoing or emergent.
  • Administers medications, treatments, and procedures. Provides training to and monitoring of staff designated by the principal to assist with health services.
  • Assists and provides support to students and parents in identifying and utilizing available and appropriate community health resources.
  • Ensures compliance with state health requirements for school attendance, which may include monitoring immunization status, performing health assessments/screenings, providing case management, and implementing interventions to control the spread of communicable disease.
  • Provides health counseling and education to students to assist them in developing self-care skills and decision-making regarding their health needs and behaviors.
  • Promotes the health, safety, and optimal well-being of students and staff and provides In-service education opportunities for staff on health-related issues.
  • Collaborates with community agencies, health professionals, and school staff to identify the health needs, current and potential, of children and youth to facilitate school and community planning and intervention.
  • Assumes responsibility for professional growth and development including participation in school-related programs.
  • Performs other such tasks and duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor.

Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Must possess a valid license, in good standing, to practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Must maintain current certification in CPR with AED and First Aid, from a recognized provider, with eligibility to obtain instructor certification.

Requisite Education and Experience:
  • Must have a minimum of two years of supervised nursing experience in community health, child health, or a related specialty prior to entry into school nursing practice.
  • Graduation from an Accredited School of Nursing.


Physical Requirements:

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some significant climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions required.
