Job Description:
The Dean of Students works with teachers and school staff to manage student conduct and behavior in order to achieve positive student growth and development; Helps supervise student discipline to assist teachers and staff to carry out the total instructional and student program; Develops responsible student behavior and citizenship, promotes positive school climate and fosters parent and community support. The Dean of Students is assigned individually to a class cohort and will follow those students through the 6-8th grade cycle.

This job reports to the school Principal.

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree; Master's degree preferred.

Certificates & Licenses: Valid Virginia Department of Education license required, or the ability to obtain one. Administration and supervision endorsement preferred.

Experience: At least three years of K-12 school division experience. Grades 6-8 preferred. Demonstrated competencies (engagements, observations, evaluations, and tracking tools) to assess and manage student behavior. Experience planning and delivering student discipline and/or ethics programs.

Essential Functions:

  • Assists teachers, school counselors, and parents in developing student expectations and individual student behavioral contracts (verbal or written).
  • Conducts frequent walks throughout the school and outdoor campus to serve as a highly visible presence to deter negative behavior and promote positive behavior.
  • Coordinates with school counselors to get to know each student and help implement each and every student's IAP (Individual Achievement Plan).
  • Helps ensure the parent/guardian is actively involved and personally approves the IAP.
  • Coordinates with the Office of Pupil Services for alternative education programs as needed to assist with student transitions to and from the program.
  • Counsels and mentors students and confers and consults with parents/guardians to inform them about the policies and expectations of student behavior.
  • Develops familiarity with IEP (Individualized Education Program) and the needs of students with disabilities to become knowledgeable enough to serve as a school representative at special education meetings.
  • Develops intervention strategies and conducts programs to ensure positive student conduct and provides budget input and tracks expenditure of funds for student behavioral-modification programs.
  • Develops measurements of student behavior, tracks, and reports performance monitors the evaluation of student discipline and utilizes related data to assess the effectiveness of the student behavioral program.
  • Fosters good interpersonal relations to develop positive relationships among staff, students, parents, and the community.
  • Helps establish and implement high standards of student behavior and ethical conduct and develops and publishes respective input for student handbooks and other related publications.
  • Identifies students with attendance and/or disciplinary issues to resolve those issues with school counselors, parents, and social workers to ensure a positive outcome.
  • Investigates and resolves residency questions and/or issues.
  • Monitors teacher-student engagements to serve as a resource to teachers in dealing with classroom management issues.
  • Observe classroom situations to resolve persistent issues, thus freeing teachers to instruct and students to learn.
  • Oversees student supervision issues to help enforce school behavior, coordinate and/or conduct student suspensions and act on student discipline referrals.
  • Provides follow-up communications on student supervision issues (emails, reports, phone calls, briefings, etc.) to teachers and administrators to keep them informed.
  • Provides written and oral reports and documents in a timely manner and uses discretion and maintains confidentiality of student information.
  • Serves as liaison between the school and the parents, community organizations, and/or school police and law enforcement authorities to provide information about respective student behavior policies and issues.
  • Works and trains school Security staff and hallway monitors to move students to classrooms on time, keep students in the classroom and help ensure the overall safety of students and staff.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned, to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Clearances:

  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/CPS Background Clearance.
  • Tuberculosis Skin Test.

Public Health Compliance

  • Proof of COVID vaccination. Exemptions for religious/medical will be reviewed.
  • Must follow safety and health protocols.
