    REPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent of Academics

    SUPERVISES: Assistant Principals and School Secretaries

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve-month administrative position. Other terms are set by the Board of Education in accordance with the New London Administrators' Education Association contract.

    SCHOOL TURN-A-ROUND LEADERSHIP: New London Public School District believes that positive change is possible when five core strategies for school improvement are implemented together as a comprehensive package. These strategies include:

    1. Ensuring every student has an excellent teacher and a school leader committed to their success;

    2. Setting clear, consistent standards for academic achievement and establishing a school-wide focus on preparing all students for college and career;

    3. Increasing instructional time;

    4. Providing small group, differentiated instruction to students, daily, using highly qualified and well-trained instructors; and

    5. Collecting assessment data frequently to monitor each student's academic progress and tailoring instruction to meet the needs of all learners.

    PRIMARY FUNCTION:

    The NLHSMMC Principal directs and supervises the school operations in accordance with policies and regulations established by the Board of Education. They provide leadership in creating and managing a safe, supportive, and positive learning environment where all students excel and staff is empowered and shares the vision of high performance and collaboration, while engaging parents and community partners in the support of student achievement.

    Instructional Leadership
  • Lead the school's vision, mission, and strategic goals to support college-readiness and academic and socio-emotional success for all students; develops and implements School Improvement Plans
  • Drive rapid and dramatic instructional improvements by implementing strategies in line with the priority areas identified in the School Turn-a-Round Plan
  • Co-support the design and implementation of rigorous, standards-based instruction with measurable outcomes, alongside Content Department Supervisors and Assistant Directors
  • Be sure all staff are participating in an observation and feedback cycle that ensures continuous improvement in teaching and learning, aligned to all approved evaluation systems
  • Analyze student achievement results regularly to identify areas of need and inform school improvement efforts
  • Develop and implement a professional development plan to address identified areas of need
  • Develop a collegial environment that supports teacher leadership, collaboration, and growth-mindset
  • Co-coordinate all Special Education programs alongside Special Education Supervisors
  • Co-coordinate all EL and Bilingual programs alongside EL/Bilingual Supervisors
  • Provide strong and collaborative leadership with an honest, transparent, and inclusive style that supports high student outcomes and educational excellence
  • Model an unwavering commitment to high academic achievement, social-emotional, and whole child development of all students

  • Management and Operations
  • Ensure a safe and nurturing environment for students, staff, and families
  • Oversee the recruitment and hiring of diverse, highly qualified staff
  • Align people, time, and money (strategically) to drive student achievement
  • Apply teacher and staff performance management systems in a way that ensures a culture of continuous improvement, support, and accountability
  • Adhere to all federal and state mandates and regulations (IDEA, 504, Title IX, SRBI, etc.)
  • Comply with all state and federal laws, policies, and collective bargaining agreements
  • Manage all aspects of awarded Turn-A-Round Grants (State and Federal) aligned to the School's Improvement Plan; write to new grant opportunities as the they arise
  • Assist with the development and implementation of the District Improvement Plan, School Improvement Plan, Building Construction and Magnet Operations Plans
  • Enforce guidelines to maintain proper discipline and conduct
  • Supervise and coordinate the use of the high school campus facilities
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of district-wide policies
  • Consult and work with appropriate central office administrators with respect to the school's personnel, equipment, supplies, and curriculum, instruction, and assessment
  • Demonstrate knowledge and effective use of technology in instruction, management, and communication
  • Ensure a positive school climate that promotes students to have leadership roles and actively engage in learning
  • Safeguard the safety, health, and welfare of students and staff members
  • Lead instructional experiences to promote multi-cultural curriculum and cultural responsiveness
  • Facilitate turn-a-round work, leading to an increase in student outcomes and creation of a united, positive culture of achievement

  • Family and Community Engagement
  • Advocate for and engage family and community to support all school turn-a-round initiatives.
  • Strengthen teacher and staff capacity to cultivate and sustain meaningful partnerships with families of diverse backgrounds and with community members that support student achievement and student well-being
  • Manage sub-grants for after school enrichments and community partnerships
  • Facilitate the high school-level parent engagement committees
  • Demonstrate experience in community school practices, building partnerships and resources for a school, and a willingness to work with various community partners
  • Demonstrate outstanding communication skills with the ability to foster strong relationships with all members of the school community (students, teachers, families, and community at large) to advance the school's mission and vision

  • REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Connecticut Intermediate/Administrative Supervisory Certificate (092)
    • A Valid Connecticut Teaching Certificate

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Master's, 6th Year and/or Doctorate Degree from an accredited institution
    • Bilingual, English/Spanish, preferred but not required
    • Experience leading in an urban, high-poverty, and/or turn-a-round school
    • Extensive knowledge of magnet school program development and implementation
    • Demonstrated leadership abilities in a racially and ethnically diverse communities
    • Demonstrated success improving underperforming student achievement and making a difference in high needs communities
    • Diverse multi-cultural background
    • Successful experience as an educational leader
    • Background knowledge to raise achievement scores in math, reading and chronic absenteeism
    • Experiences with writing and managing school improvement grants

    PERFORMANCE EVALUATION: Annually by the Superintendent of Schools

    SALARY: $160,512
